VAA Visits Slurry Pavers' Route 13 FDR Project

VAA’s Carter Iseman and Mike Dudley recently had the opportunity to visit Slurry Pavers’ Full Depth Reclamation, FDR project on Route 13 in Powhatan (Richmond District). The existing pavement was extremely distressed and using the more traditional repair method of full depth patching would have required a significant amount of patching for this location. A patching operation of this nature is very expensive and time consuming while introducing multiple full depth construction joints and only the patched areas are receiving improvement.

In the FDR process, the Cold Recycler was able to pulverize 12 inches deep in a single pass which included the existing asphalt pavement, the stone base, and even soil base in some locations. During the second pass of the Recycler, cement was added and mixed with the new road base to stabilize the entire foundation of the roadway. Then the road was graded and recompacted before applying a chip seal to maintain the road until the two layers of asphalt pavement can be applied.

The FDR process was able to refurbish the complete pavement structure at one time. This process assures that the foundation of the entire existing pavement is consistently rehabbed to significantly improve the life and performance of this pavement.

We want to thank David Stowell from Slurry Pavers, Inc. for allowing us to visit his project and taking the time to explain the operation. If you would like more information on this job or Slurry's FDR procedure, contact David at dstowell@slurrypavers.com.
