WHITEHURST, Betty Lipscomb, 79, passed away on May 15, 2016, surrounded by family at home after a two-year battle with cancer. Betty was born on March 6, 1937, in Hopewell, Virginia. When she was a teen, her family moved to Richmond, where she lived the rest of her life. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1955 and attended the University of Richmond (then Westhampton College). Betty and Stuart Wilson Whitehurst Jr., were married on June 14, 1958. Devoted to making a home and raising a family, Betty was a member of the Woman's Club and the Tuckahoe Woman's Club and was involved over the years as a volunteer at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Chippenham Hospital and Retreat Doctors' Hospital. As an active member of Second Baptist Church, she served as a deacon, participated on several committees, volunteered at the Churchill Wellness Center, and served for many years as one of the church's wedding coordinators. Betty and Stuart enjoyed traveling, spending time with family, and relaxing at their home in Kilmarnock. Betty took special pleasure in making everyday life and her surroundings beautiful and in keeping up with a wide circle of friends. She was especially grateful for the remarkable, loving support of so many during her illness and appreciated the kindness and professionalism of her many care providers, especially the nurses and staff at the VCU Massey Cancer Center at Stony Point. In addition to her husband, Stuart, Betty is survived by three sons and their spouses, Wilson Whitehurst (Liz) of Richmond, Brad Whitehurst (Alan Salz) of New York, New York, and Mark Whitehurst (Lucinda) of Richmond; three grandchildren, Megan Whitehurst and Alexander Whitehurst, both of Richmond, and Joy Whitehurst of New York, New York; three siblings, Nancy Clements (Bill) of Richmond, Dorothy (Dot) Edwards of Tappahannock and Joe Lipscomb of Ormond Beach, Florida; and several nieces and nephews. Betty was predeceased by parents, Edward Alexander Lipscomb and Eula Hightower Lipscomb; and brother, Robert Lipscomb. A memorial service will be held at Second Baptist Church on Friday, May 20, 2016, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Benevolence Fund, Second Baptist Church, which supports the short-term needs of struggling families of the church: 9614 River Rd., Richmond, VA 23229.
