Last month, USCC represented the composting industry and our Seal of Testing Assurance (STA) Program at the American Society of Landscape Architects’ 2025 Conference and EXPO.
ASLA is the world’s largest conference and trade show for the landscape architecture industry, bringing together over 6,000 professionals. Compost plays an essential role in this field—as a solution for planting, turf establishment & maintenance, erosion control, improving soil water-holding capacity, soil blends, and many more.
Executive Director Linda Norris-Waldt and Director of Public Policy Chris Snow staffed the USCC Booth in the Trade Show Hall. They connected landscape architects with our network of STA-Certified compost producers, shared information about compost specifications, and demonstrated how the STA Program helps professionals make informed choices about compost. To support their efforts to promote compost use in landscape architecture, Clinton Sander, Marketing Manager of A1 Organics, and co-chair of the USCC Market Development Committee, also attended and gave a popular presentation entitled “Beyond Water Conservation—A Holistic Approach to Designing ‘Great Places’”
A primary focus of the USCC’s work is expanding end uses for compost products. While a large portion of compost is utilized in agriculture, other end uses, such as landscape architecture, can bring huge environmental and economic benefits.
The USCC collaborated with Dr. Sally Brown of the University of Washington and Ron Alexander to create the guide “Compost & Soil Improvement: Tools for Climate Resillient Landscapes.” This guide details the many ways that compost leads to more resilient landscape architecture and, in turn, more resilient climates. It details the many benefits that compost can bring to landscape architecture, from improved planting, turf establishment & maintenance, erosion control, improving soil water-holding capacity, soil blends, and more. You can find the full guide by clicking here.
