We’re modernizing compost testing with a major update to the Test Methods for the Examination of Composting and Compost (TMECC).
From nutrients and organic matter to PFAS (“forever chemicals”) and persistent herbicides, these updates will help ensure compost is tested to the highest environmental and safety standards. Stronger testing means safer products, which leads to healthier soils and more trust in the compost industry.
Phase 1 key accomplishments to date:
· Engaged with over 20 expert reviewers.
· Designed a new, user-friendly TMECC format for both print and digital use.
· 14 new test methods submitted for consideration with more on the way!
· Updated chapters on nitrogen, pH, EC, biological assays, respirometry, weed seeds, and organic matter.
Thank you to the TMECC Standards and Practices Committee for developing a formal process for inserting new methods into the TMECC. For those of you interested in adding a method to the TMECC, please contact Shelby Hoglund at ShelbyHoglund@compostfoundation.org to receive more information and the form. The form will be available online in October 2025 at the TMECC website.
Phase I wraps up in January 2026. Phase II will dive into new methods, including tests for PFAS and persistent herbicides. These updates will support high-quality data, safe and reliable compost, and healthier communities.
We’re just getting started! Visit our TMECC webpage to learn more about how you can support this endeavor.
