Although the human body can withstand a lot, few things can put an employee on their back faster than a spinal cord, disc, ligament, or back muscle injury.

As your most valuable asset, your employees’ health and well-being should be at the top of your list when it comes to successful workplace safety. Back pain accounts for a major portion of all recorded absences from work, and it is the third leading cause of physical limitation and disability. By helping your employees understand the value of safe lifting techniques, you can help break old habits, leading to new, safer ways to lift heavy or unwieldy items.

Evaluate your risk management safety program and consider the following...

Question of the Month: We just hired our first remote employee. The employee will be completely remote and will be living and working in a different state than where our company is located. Which state laws apply to this employee — the laws of our company’s state or the laws of the employee’s state?

As a buisness owner, you understand that ultimately you may face the challenge that your role as a leader at your company will one day end. This can be difficult, especially if your business is family owned and operated. Or, you may have already experienced this kind of transition through an illness, death, sale, or the business being passed down through generations. If you are planning to pass your business to family, it is important to discuss it with them openly and honestly. Planning for the next generation can be challenging, but the cost of not facing this question may be substantial, both financially and personally. Investing the time now to ensure a successful transition can be impactful for the new owner, and it will show your employees that there is a bright future for the next generation of the business.

Legislative Updates
Attorney Rick Alaniz addresses the need for supervisors to be knowledgeable of ADA and FMLA issues.

Supervisors occupy a far more demanding and consequential position in today’s workplace given ever increasing regulation. Supervisors are the trainers of new employees, the employees’ primary contact with the company, as well as the employer’s eyes and ears on the production floor or around the office. Perhaps a supervisor’s most significant role is serving as the employer’s first line of defense against the incidence and continuation of regulatory non-compliance. The result of the patchwork of regulation in which federal, state, and even local governments have the authority and inclination to issue rules and regulations that impact the workplace is a complex web of rules. Violation of any part of this hodgepodge of often overlapping rules can result in substantial legal liability. Ensuring that your supervisors are able to recognize circumstances that could violate these legal standards or entitle an employee to certain rights in the workplace should be a priority. Unfortunately, far too few employers undertake the necessary effort to effectively prepare their supervisors for one of their most critical roles.

The PHCC Overhead & Profit Calculator, developed by PHCC Educational Foundation, was made using feedback from contractors who know just what it takes to make businesses successful and profitable. This simple tool helps business owners calculate their real costs and find the right selling price for their company.

Too many contractors set their prices by guessing the price customers will pay or by comparing their pricing to those of their competitors. By not recovering their own true costs, these contractors are essentially working hard every day while putting themselves out of business.

The PHCC Fishing tournament began as a company fishing event for Beyer Plumbing & Mechanical held at Woody’s in Port Aransas in a tent out in the parking lot! Over the years, as the Beyer Boys continued to support the two local trade associations, the San Antonio Air Conditioning Contractors of America and the San Antonio chapter of the Plumbing, Heating, Cooling Contractors, this event eventually split to form two separate successful fishing tournaments for each Association today!

In 2021 the PHCC-SA Memorial tournament was renamed to recognize the many contributions to PHCC-SA chapter and the fishing tournaments’ initial beginnings to honor Perry Beyer Jr.and his passing from cancer in November 2020. Upon Perry’s passing, the Beyer Family established the Beyer Cares foundation in memory of Perry and to honor his wife and Vice President, Cindy Beyer, who was diagnosed and survived with breast cancer in 2007.
It’s time to build on real relationships with your plumbing, heating and cooling family… partnerships that helped contractors survive market fluctuations, industry changes, even a pandemic. It’s time to tap into reimagined best practices, the latest industry data, cutting-edge technology, and proven leadership perspectives. It’s time to discover new ways to work, learn and lead.
