As the HVAC industry continues its push toward more sustainable solutions, R-32 is quickly becoming a leading low-GWP refrigerant choice for residential and light commercial systems. Since 2012, more than 280 million R-32 units have been installed across 130+ countries—and now the U.S. is catching up.
For PHCC contractors, this shift presents both an opportunity and a responsibility. R-32 delivers strong cooling performance and energy efficiency as a single-component refrigerant.
Unlike refrigerant blends, R-32, being a single-component refrigerant, makes it easier to service, reclaim, and reuse—helping streamline maintenance and repair work in the field. Its straightforward composition simplifies recovery processes and reduces long-term environmental impact.
With the industry steadily moving toward refrigerants like R-32, now is the time to get familiar with its properties, applications, and best practices for handling.

Question
During the hot summer months, we turn on the air conditioning to keep our employees cool and comfortable in the workplace. We have one employee who, due to a disability, is sensitive to cold temperatures. Besides turning down the air conditioning (which other employees may complain about), what can we do in this situation?
Answer
|
When did you last check the personal protective equipment (PPE) your employees use? Are they wearing it correctly and for the right tasks, or not using it at all?
Ensuring proper PPE use can help your employees stay safe and healthy on the job. And it could keep your business away from costly and preventable workers compensation claims.
Management Responsibilities
As a leader in your industry, it’s up to you to enforce the use of PPE. Consider the following to up your PPE game:
- Management develops and oversees a PPE program, conducts hazard assessments, and trains supervisors. - Supervisors provide, train, and ensure proper use of PPE while maintaining records. - Employees wear PPE, attend regular training, and report repair or replacement needs.

Following the end of the veto period on June 22nd, the final numbers became official: Texas lawmakers filed 8,719 total bills in 2025. Ultimately, 1,213 bills, approximately 14% of the total bills filed, advanced to Governor Greg Abbott for his consideration. Governor Abbott signed 1,045 bills, filed another 141 bills without his signature, and exercised his veto pen on 26 bills in addition to line-item vetos within the budget. The legislature also passed 17 measures that Texas voters will be asked to consider as part of the Constitutional Amendment Election to be held November 4th. Secretary of State Jane Nelson recently drew the ballot order for the proposed constitutional amendments.
The Monday morning following the veto deadline, Governor Abbott announced his intentions to convene a special session July 21st to revisit several issues that did not pass during the regular session including the much-publicized veto of the ban of THC products which was heavily favored by Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick. The official special session proclamation has not yet been filed.
Longtime Tarrant County legislator Kelly Hancock resigned from the Texas Senate last month and was subsequently sworn in as the new Chief Clerk of the Texas Comptroller's office. He assumed the duties of Acting Comptroller effective July 1st, when current Comptroller Glenn Hegar officially left office for his new role as Chancellor of the Texas A&M University System. Hancock has since announced he will run for a full term as comptroller in 2026 when the open seat is on the ballot. Railroad Commissioner Christi Craddick and former State Senator Don Huffines have also announced their intentions to seek the Republican nomination for Comptroller. Governor Greg Abbott has called for a special election to be held November 4th to fill the vacancy created by Senator Hancock’s resignation. Leigh Wambsganss has announced her candidacy and secured the endorsement of Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick. The Hancock seat will also be on the ballot in 2026 for a full four-year term.
Several other Republican state senators also announced election plans recently. State Senator Joan Huffman announced she will run for attorney general in 2026. Her Senate seat is not on the ballot, so it is a “free shot” at the position. Senator Mayes Middleton previously announced he does not intend to run for the State Senate again in 2026 and instead will be seeking the Attorney General nomination as well. State Senator Robert Nichols announced he will be retiring from the legislature at the end of his current term. State Representative Trent Ashby immediately announced he will run for Nichols’s seat in 2026. State Senator Brian Birdwell announced he will also be retiring from the legislature and not seeking re-election in 2026. The US Army veteran was first elected to the Texas Senate in 2010. Republican State Representative David Cook announced his intentions to run for the open Senate seat. Additional campaign announcements are expected throughout the summer and fall leading up to the 2026 primary filing period in November.

In a world where smart homes are becoming the norm, one often-overlooked threat continues to cause billions in property damage each year: water leaks. Whether it’s a slow drip under a sink or a catastrophic burst pipe, water damage is one of the most common and costly disasters homeowners face. Enter water leak detection devices—a new wave of smart home technology designed to detect leaks early and, in some cases, stop them automatically.
But are these devices a necessary home investment or just another gadget in the Internet of Things? As with many innovations, the answer lies somewhere in the middle.
Early Detection, Big Savings
The key benefit of water leak detection systems is prevention. By alerting homeowners to the presence of leaks, whether from a washing machine hose, water heater, or hidden pipe, these devices can dramatically reduce water waste and prevent thousands of dollars in property damage. Some estimates suggest the average insurance claim for water damage exceeds $10,000, and over 10% of U.S. homes suffer leaks that waste 90 gallons or more per day.
The marquis products, such as the LeakSecure® system, take things a step further by integrating remote-controlled shut-off valves. When paired with additional, strategically placed sensors, these systems can automatically shut off a home’s water supply the moment a leak is detected—an invaluable safeguard when you’re away from home.
