One of the most critical challenges facing family businesses is how to plan for the next generation. Issues include balancing the needs and expectations of family members, addressing conflicts, and ensuring the selection of capable successors.

Based on their skills and interests, there are distinct roles that rising family members might assume within a business — and the capabilities required can be very different. Implementing a business succession plan that encompasses these dynamics is a critical step toward success.

Question: I’ve noticed that around this time of the year, employees start to become less motivated and productive. I think at least part of it has to do with their spending a lot of time discussing nonwork items, such as the Super Bowl and “March Madness.” Aside from disciplining employees for wasting too much time talking about nonwork matters, what are positive solutions I can use to keep employees motivated?
Legislative Updates
Texas voters went to the polls Tuesday, March 5th, to cast votes in the state’s primary election.  Candidates were on the ballot seeking positions at the federal, state, and county levels of government. There were also propositions proposed by the Republican and Democratic parties on their respective ballots. The Republican primary saw a higher turnout of voters compared to the Democratic primary. In total, approximately 3.2 million Texans voted with 2.3 million of those votes being cast in the Republican primary and about 975,000 votes cast in the Democratic primary.

In the Texas legislature, nine House Republican incumbents were defeated in their bids for re-election and another eight, including the Speaker of the House, Dade Phelan, were forced into a runoff election. Defeated incumbents include representatives Steve Allison, Ernest Bailes, Travis Clardy, Jill Dutton, Jacey Jetton, Glenn Rogers, Hugh Shine, Reggie Smith, and Kronda Thimesch. In addition to Speaker Phelan, the Republican House incumbents facing runoff elections include DeWayne Burns, Frederick Frazier, Justin Holland, Stephanie Klick, John Kuempel, Lynn Stucky, and Gary VanDeaver.  Representative Shawn Thierry is the only Democrat in a runoff election; all other Democrat incumbents were successful in their primary elections. The primary run off election will be held Tuesday, May 28th. At this point, when taking into consideration the number of House members who did not seek reelection, the House will have at least 24 new members in 2025, but likely more following the runoff election and general election in November. Meanwhile, the Senate will have at least two new members in 2025 with senators Drew Springer and John Whitmire not seeking re-election to the legislature.
