Researchers from the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) at Colorado State University (CSU), in affiliation with NOAA, are conducting a survey to better understand your experiences with fire weather products and services, especially those provided by the National Weather Service (NWS). This survey is part of a research study aimed at understanding how these products are used and how they can be improved to better support your decision-making needs. The survey will take approximately 15–20 minutes to complete.
We are excited to share that Mark Campise, recently promoted Fire Chief of the Sugar Land Fire Department, has also been selected to serve as the Southeast Regional Director for the Texas Fire Chiefs Association (TFCA). Chief Campise was appointed by the Board of Directors to continue in the position that had been occupied by Chief Jennifer Maxwell. This new appointment is a reflection of Chief Campise’s deep commitment to the fire service and his passion for supporting leaders across the state. As Southeast Regional Director, he will represent departments of all sizes and structures across the region—ensuring every voice is heard and supported. He’ll serve as a vital link between the TFCA Board of Directors and the departments in the southeast area, helping share information, advocate for regional needs, and foster strong connections throughout the fire service community. In this position, Chief Campise will be available to provide guidance and support on TFCA matters and will help organize regional meetings each year to encourage collaboration and idea-sharing among departments. He’ll also take part in TFCA events such as the Annual Conference, Fire Chiefs Academy graduations, and other special ceremonies whenever possible. This appointment reflects not only his leadership within Sugar Land but also the respect and confidence he’s earned across the state. Please join us in congratulating Chief Mark Campise on this well-deserved honor. His dedication, insight, and vision continue to move the fire service forward—locally and regionally. The Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) has seen a remarkable increase in workload and productivity over the past five years. The increases in funding, staffing and equipment, provided during the 88th Legislative session were greatly appreciated and has enabled us to make tremendous strides in the services we provide. Due to the continued growth of the Texas Fire Service, we are struggling to meet our mandated inspections while managing injury and complaint investigations.
TCFP offers “regional meetings” throughout the year in a variety of locations around the state. These meetings are opportunities for members of nearby fire departments and other regulated entities to meet some of our staff in person. We want to answer your questions, listen to your concerns, and give timely updates related to commission news. In addition, through a partnership with TEEX, CE will be awarded for your attendance at these meetings. For a list of all upcoming meeting dates, visit the Regional Meetings webpage. In this episode of Fire Law Roundup for June 2, 2025, Brad and Curt discuss an Ohio appellate decision granting firefighters immunity in an EMS-related negligence suit; a lawsuit against a Texas fire department over injuries sustained during a department-sponsored event; a ruling that district chiefs in the Orlando Fire Department do not qualify as hourly employees under the First Responder Regulations; the dismissal of a lawsuit brought by a former San Francisco firefighter over injuries he sustained at a building fire that he claims were due to race discrimination; and a burning question about whether the sharing of a photo of a look-alike female can constitute sexual harassment.
