Recognize a Colleague with TIA's Samaritan Award

The 3PL Samaritan Award recognizes a TIA member for exceptional service and assistance to others in need. The recognized service or assistance can take any form:

  • Volunteering logistical support;
  • Providing manpower, resources, or financial support to others in need;
  • Sponsoring sporting events;
  • Providing scholarships; and
  • Hiring disabled individuals, or other areas.

The purpose of the award is to recognize the good works in which the 3PL industry engages by highlighting a specific 3PL Samaritan effort each year.

Eligibility: Any TIA Member, Associate Member, or their employees.

Process: A TIA member can nominate itself, another TIA member company, individuals, or organizations by Jan. 24, 2020.

The nomination should outline the charitable activity, providing sufficient detail for the committee to select one award recipient. A committee of TIA members will then review the nominations and make a recommendation to the TIA Foundation Board of Directors. Selections will be made by Feb. 7, 2020.

Recognition: The TIA 3PL Samaritan Award will be presented during the TIA 2020 Capital Ideas Conference & Exhibition, April 1-4, 2020, in Austin, TX.

The company can designate a charity to receive funds raised at the TIA Capital Ideas Conference & Exhibition. The company representative accepting the award will receive complimentary conference registration and be reimbursed for their airfare and their hotel in Austin.

Building the Best Brokerage: Getting Your Org Structure and Compensation Plans Right is CRITICAL!

There are many organization models used by brokerages, from cradle to grave to the “Chicago model” to Pod Structures. Additionally, we are the dawn of the next, new technological sea change that is going to radically alter how all brokerages operate.

Whether your brokerage is primarily a technology play focusing more on the software, or you are running a traditional model but seeing old rules change because more can be done through automation, you need to consider the roles your organization needs, the process flow between those roles, the right accountabilities for each role, and the proper compensation plans for those roles to drive the RIGHT results based on your current strategic needs.

And of course, your compensation plans must be flexible enough to adapt to future changes and market swings, such as we saw between 2018 and 2019. This seminar will help you understand the complex dynamics that exist in this world regarding organization structures and compensation design. One size TRULY does not fit all!

Industry News and Advocacy

On January 20, the Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) will begin a new campaign to increase our political influence on Capitol Hill by educating Congress on the importance of the 3PL industry and advocating on behalf of our legislative goals, powered by small-dollar donations from employees in the 3PL industry. We are calling this the $20 in 2020 Campaign.

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has released a final rule on joint employment which would limit the situations in which multiple employers share liability for paying workers their wages. The new rule takes effect on March 16, 2020.

This kind of simplistic statistic can be incredibly misleading and even dangerous. In the first place, what is meant by “broker”? Is this a person who calls only shippers, one who calls only carriers, or one who does both sides?  Does role and organization structure matter? Does location in the country matter?  Does the compensation method (draw vs seat cost vs salary + incentive) matter? OF COURSE.

Brokers Seeing Higher Margins Due To Technology Investment
InMotion Global, Inc.
It now appears the evidence is overwhelming. Brokers and 3PL’s leveraging new technology are raising their margins and lowering costs faster than those that don’t. In fact, 96% of brokers now say that technology like AscendTMS, TriumphPay, Smart Capacity, and Cargo Chief’s new human-like robot called Booking Assistant are helping to quickly eliminate labor costs and raise profit margins. Moreover, the right technology, when used properly, is clearly crowning the winners in the brokerage space.
