Industry News and Advocacy

Thanksgiving week was short but intense. Thanksgiving occurred later in November this year, so the holiday weekend coincided with end-of-month pressures. Not surprisingly, rates rose sharply on loads that were picked up during the week, to entice carriers and drivers who may have had to spend Thanksgiving on the road. Somewhat surprisingly, the lanes with the biggest rate increases actually gained in both directions.

Employees across the third-party logistics industry are planning for their retirement and thinking about the future they will leave for their children and grandchildren. But soon, Congress could pass legislation called the SECURE Act which would drastically change the game for people planning to leave their IRA to their inheritors.

TIA is seeking young professionals to join our Young Executives Committee. Historically, the Young Executives Committee exclusively held an annual lunch event at the April Conference, and no formal activities ensued until the next year. But with the increasing number of young professionals joining the 3PL industry, the moment is ripe to formalize the committee and provide our members with a platform for networking and information sharing with the next generation of TIA leaders.

TIA is looking to enhance our offerings for members who handle air and ocean freight. If your company handless air and/or ocean freight, please complete this survey to tell us more about your air and ocean freight business, so we may better serve you. By taking this survey, you will help TIA expand our member committees in these areas and develop additional resources, so that we can add additional value to the industry.

The survey will ask you how much of your revenue comes from airfreight and ocean freight forwarding; what other associations and publications you currently use to get information on air and ocean freight issues; what issues related to air and ocean freight you would like TIA to focus more on; and who your main points of contact are for those kinds of freight. All answers will be kept confidential.

TIA has partnered with the Addiction Policy Forum, a national nonprofit, to address substance use disorders in the workplace. The partnership will allow you and your employees a confidential, app-based counseling service free of charge. We are passionate about beginning work on this initiative to help our members help employees in need.

Brokers Seeing Higher Margins Due To Technology Investment
InMotion Global, Inc.
It now appears the evidence is overwhelming. Brokers and 3PL’s leveraging new technology are raising their margins and lowering costs faster than those that don’t. In fact, 96% of brokers now say that technology like AscendTMS, TriumphPay, Smart Capacity, and Cargo Chief’s new human-like robot called Booking Assistant are helping to quickly eliminate labor costs and raise profit margins. Moreover, the right technology, when used properly, is clearly crowning the winners in the brokerage space.

As the world of technology speeds up and operation costs rise around us, every 3PL needs to become more efficient by focusing its operations on key areas of impact. We believe the foundation of this increased efficiency is built on data, automation and networks a critical part of every growing brokerage today.

We invite you to join our webinar for a discussion about the five foundations of data necessary for building a profitable operation. We will discuss the types of tools and networks needed to access this data, as well as the KPIs we’ve identified to help navigate a clearer roadmap to financial stability.

  • Creating competitive advantage;
  • Building a strong carrier network;
  • Driving operational efficiency with technology;
  • Leveraging data to create agility; and
  • Delivering outstanding customer service.

TIA's Chief Economist, Noël Perry, takes on the chance of a recession in 2020. After 11 years with no significant slowdowns, it may be hard to conceive of one. Noël takes us through the causes of recessions, the reasons why one is likely soon, and what happens to trucking and brokers, when the economy slumps. He will finish by reminding us that recessions always end, being followed-up with good times. That makes recession an unexpectedly good time for those businesses that are ready for recovery.
