On Tuesday, July 9, TIA President & CEO Bob Voltmann responded by letter to Ray Martinez, the Administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Administrator Martinez recently offered remarks opposing a National Motor Carrier Selection Standard, indicating that such a standard was not necessary as the Agency would refine data that should then be interpreted by entities to determine whether they will hire a motor carrier.

TIA members are at the forefront of digitization of the supply chain, and are constantly challenged to keep ahead of changing technologies to build effective relationships with their customers and carriers.  The 3PL industry is made up of companies of all sizes, all of whom can relate to concerns about cybersecurity. Please help TIA understand how you are protecting your business from this threat, so that the Association can develop new tools and resources to help you and to help protect the industry.

Independence Day fell on a Thursday this year, so there were many people who took Friday off as well. That meant any shipments needing to be delivered last week had a tighter window, and as a result, those shipments moved at a premium. The average van rate during the shortened holiday week was $1.93/mi., which was 4¢ higher than the June average and 14¢ higher than May.

Despite ongoing challenges against its root court decision, lawmakers in California are pressing forward with a bill that its opponents say threatens the traditional owner-operator model in the state. The legislation, AB-5, passed the state’s General Assembly last month and now heads to the California Senate, where lawmakers are expected to take up the bill when they return from recess in mid-August.
