The latest news out of the California Air Resources Board (CARB) is not good for transportation companies. Recently, Schneider and Old Dominion Freight Line both settled with CARB for violations under the Truck and Bus Rule for a combined total of $225,000, plus additional costs on air filtration projects in the State. These recent fines follow two other violations for Marten Logistics for $100,000 and Roadrunner Transportation Systems for $52,250 as a result of violating a record keeping regulation associated with CARB’s Truck and Bus Rules.

The orange sun was setting in the blue sky last Wednesday, casting amber shadows on the mountains and desert, while more than 200 attendees and exhibitors at the first annual Technovations event in Tucson said goodbye at the evening reception, held on the Meecha Lawn of the J.W. Marriott Star Pass Resort.

In case you missed it, TIA recently released a comprehensive report on freight visibility, “The 2018 Visibility Report,” drawn from more than 20 sources including the five largest 3PLs on the Transport Topics Logistics 50.

The top Republican authorizer on highways and transit policy in the U.S. House pledged to work alongside Democrats in crafting a long-term measure designed to maintain and modernize the country’s infrastructure system.

Missouri Rep. Sam Graves recently announced his candidacy for the ranking member spot on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee when the next Congress begins in January. Democrats will control the majority in the House, while the Senate will remain under Republican rule.

The trucking industry contributed $5.79 million to election campaigns for the 2018 midterm cycle, according to data from the Center for Responsive Politics, with industry donations heavily favoring Republican candidates. However, a few of the top benefactors of trucking contributions lost their bids for re-election.

The top recipient of trucking-contributed campaign dollars, incumbent Rep. Jeff Denham in California’s 10th Congressional district, appears to be slightly trailing his opponent in a nailbiter, though the race as of Nov. 12 hasn’t officially been decided and Denham’s Democratic opponent Josh Harder now has 51 percent.

Van freight volume is building on the top eight lanes originating in Atlanta. That signals the start of a rebound for the Southeastern freight hub, but for the first 10 days of November, van rates out of Atlanta are falling instead of rising. That’s because inbound volume is also on the rise, so there are plenty of trucks looking for loads out of A-Town.
