Tom McLeod is the President and Chief Executive Officer of McLeod Software, which he founded in 1985. Tom is a thought leader in the transportation industry, specifically on the use of current and upcoming information technology to support trucking and brokerage operations. McLeod Software has been an active member of the Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) for the past 14 years, is a founding member of the Blockchain in Transport Alliance (BiTA) and a member of ACT1. Tom has long been active and has held leadership positions in the American Trucking Association, the Truckload Carriers Association, and the Alabama Trucking Association.

We asked him for a preview of what he will present at 3PL Technovations.

“We plan to build our presentation around digital freight matching,” he said. “Systems that support and streamline putting a load on a truck. New technology allows brokers to cover more freight in less time. It’s really changed the game. Technology is important if you don’t want to be left out in the cold.”

Asked how technology has changed the logistics industry, McLeod commented: “It’s improved productivity, streamlined it and eliminated a lot of the drudgery.”

But however important technology is, it doesn’t take the place of what really makes 3PLs successful. Something that never goes out of style. “It has not replaced the need,” he believes, “for a business relationship.”

Register for 3PL Technovations and meet Tom. There is strict seating capacity for this event and spots are going fast. Don’t be left out.

Last week, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) published in the Federal Register a notice of proposed rulemaking and request for comments on the standard for determining joint-employer status. All comments must be received on Nov. 13, 2018.

The global transportation services market was estimated at about $5.8 trillion last year, and there is much at stake for legacy freight forwarding, logistics and supply-chain management companies. There also is an increased pressure to respond to the boom in package deliveries with the rise in e-commerce spending.

“I have never seen a market like this in my entire career,” said Kristy Knichel, CEO of Knichel Logistics, summing up the freight market for 2018. Coming from someone with 25 years’ experience in the industry, this speaks volumes. With that in mind, expect these current market conditions to continue well into 2019 and potentially beyond.
