Nursing Leadership

By Julia Quinn-Szcesuil, Minority Nurse

As a minority nurse, you know diversity and inclusion means much more than what the people in your organization look like and where they have come from. Diversity and inclusion is absolutely focused on creating a nursing workforce that more closely mirrors the different populations in a given area. But diversity and inclusion also means more because the culture of a workplace needs to feel comfortable to the people who work there.

On the surface, the settings and locations where nurse executives work may seem vastly different—rural versus urban, safety-net hospitals versus academic facilities, large multi-state health systems versus stand-alone independent hospitals, acute care versus the ambulatory setting to name some. Yet, regardless of these differences, nurse leaders across the nation face many of the same challenges and concerns.

Building a thriving culture takes a great deal of dedication and motivation. But it isn't all about being the first and being the best. The deployment of soft skills - like building interpersonal relationships, mentoring, transparency and kindness - go a long way in fulfilling our mission and maintaining the bottom line. Of these soft skills, one especially stands out: kindness.

With the addition of blockchain technology, patients can get more control over their health records, Digital Treasury CEO Jacob Lee told the Digital Times. If medical records are stored and managed on blockchain platforms, patients can determine to whom and when they want to give decrypted access of their record, Mr. Lee said. For example, patients can decrypt their data for health counselors, health insurance firms or new physicians.

The art of de-escalation is an invaluable tool developed primarily to defuse hostile individuals and situations. In its original usage, the concept of de-escalation implies the existence of both verbal and non-verbal skills and techniques which, if used selectively and appropriately, may reduce the level of an aggressor’s hostility and emotional reactivity.

By 2030, every one of the 78 million baby boomers will be over 65, reports the U.S. Census Bureau, a figure that will exceed the number of children for the first time in history. These are staggering statistics, and to effectively care for all these aging adults, providers must implement solutions today. While healthcare providers are aware of these statistics, and many health systems are already hitting upon effective solutions to care for older adults, there's an overall lack of consistency in how systems approach this challenge.
