Today there are innumerable career options for nurses and multiple forums for discussing topics of interest – everything from the casual blog to scientific journals. Because there are so many nursing specialties and career options, many of these forums are directed at the specialties, but are there concerns that are universal?

Workplace violence is an increasingly recognized safety issue in the health care community. AONE and Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) have published Guiding Principles on Mitigating Violence in the Workplace to assist nurse leaders in systematically addressing measures to manage and reduce violence against health care professionals.

Health care leaders are starting to recognize that consumers are becoming a major decision-making force. For the foreseeable future, consumers will pay more for health care and be more involved in picking plans, providers and individual treatment options. Assuming nurses continue to train at current levels, U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) expects new full-time equivalents to grow by 33% nationally by 2025 while the nationwide demand is expected to grow by just 21%. New delivery care models will likely contribute to new growth in demand for nurses, which is not considered for the projections in this study, according to HRSA.
