As we enter the winter holiday season, many of us find it a time to reflect on the past, recognize the many things for which we are grateful and make plans for the future in the new year and beyond. As I take time for my own reflection, I am humbled and honored to have started my term as President of TONL, an organization near and dear to my heart because of its commitment to excellence and drive to push the nursing profession forward.
 
In what has been described as our “post-pandemic” transition, we continue to face a number of new challenges in the healthcare industry from labor and supply chain shortages to seeing increased costs and shrinking budgets. I find comfort in tackling these challenges together, as a nursing leadership network across the great State of Texas. Throughout 2022, TONL has continued to push forward in our leadership, advocacy and education through the engagement and dedication of our members, task forces, committees and our board of directors. In all of our efforts, we have profound support and remain incredibly grateful to our partner in CMP Management.

The TONL Annual Conference will be held February 23–24, 2023 at the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. As always, the conference will offer a line-up of dynamic and engaging speakers covering topics relevant to nursing leadership and will also offer networking opportunities, industry insight and more.

What do you enjoy most about chapter meetings?

Engaging with other colleagues across the state of Texas

How has involvement in TONL and the Chapter helped you in your profession?

It reminds me of what I do well and what I still have to learn. The idea exchanges and ongoing work are energizing.

What keeps you busy when you aren’t working?

My 6-year-old German wire-haired Pointer, Ellie Rose, and my husband, Edward. We love travel, great food and wine, and spending time playing together as a family.

What is one fun fact about you most people might not know?

I enjoy singing and several years ago traveled to New York and Australia as part of the cast of a show called "Hey Florence". It is about the "truths" of nursing.

What is your favorite book or movie?

Too many books to select just one, but Under the Tuscan Sun is one of the top movies for me. I love the scenery as well as the story of a woman taking a risk and finding the joy and blessings in that risk.

The healthcare environment is dynamic; therefore, a leader in the sector must constantly push the workforce to deliver safe, efficient, and high-quality care to all patients. For leaders to succeed, they must perform administrative duties effectively, guide the clinical team, and manage resources appropriately. Since the healthcare industry is known for shifting regulations due to continuously evolving technologies, rising costs, emerging ethical concerns, and clinical advancement, it is essential for leaders to integrate relevant leadership theory, qualities, and skills, to become more adaptable (Figueroa et al., 2019). Hence, to ensure that healthcare organizations maintain a positive culture, it is essential to start creating and modeling future leaders and give them the skill necessary to develop patient-centered care strategies and abilities to tackle complex issues related to care delivery. This speech explores ways of creating future leaders, effective mentorship strategies, and measuring results-oriented nursing leadership.

In early 2021, TONL examined the current challenges in healthcare management and the need to integrate high-potential clinicians and young careerists. Traditionally, nurse executive training included years of experience. This paradigm may overlook many young nurse leaders that seek this path.

The conversation brought together women leaders in healthcare to discuss their careers, the importance of being leaders, and the impact of mentorship and diversity.

In the past several years, the US healthcare system has faced critical problems related to health equity, variations in quality and safety, and spiraling costs. The continuing healthcare disparities and cultural issues have also impacted access to care. Patient safety issues including medication errors, hospital-acquired conditions (HACs), healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), and missed care continue to plague the healthcare delivery system (Warshawsky & Cramer, 2019). The recent pandemic has exacerbated workforce management and employee issues. Technological advancements and innovations, new therapeutics and pharmaceuticals, and emerging diagnostics have compounded the increasing healthcare costs. More than ever, there is a compelling business case for addressing what ails the current healthcare system (Leger, 2023). Increasingly, there is pressing impetus to demonstrate the value of nursing in the current costly healthcare environment. As nursing leaders, we must understand and advance value-informed nursing practice (Yakusheva & Buerhaus, 2022).

When a family member needs nursing care, feelings of stress, worry, and uncertainty set in. In these situations, the importance of the emotional support caregivers provide is sometimes underappreciated. The holiday season is a great opportunity to reflect on why we are thankful for nurses and how they make a difference.

Certifications
I am working towards receiving the Nurse Executive Certification (NE-BC) and am already an American Heart Association BLS Faculty, Instructor, and Site Coordinator for Baylor Medicine. I also have ACLS, PALS, and am FEMA NIMS and ICS certified.

How has TONL contributed to your career?
Not only do I find the chapter meetings and annual conferences interesting and mentally stimulating, but I am able to discuss today’s nursing challenges with my peers in a manner that positively influences my everyday practice. I also participate on the Diversity Equity and Inclusion Committee, which I find extremely fulfilling and helps me feel I am making a lasting impact on the nursing profession.

What is your background in the nursing field?
Emergency/trauma, pediatrics, research, pediatric anesthesia, PACU (adult and pediatric), and now quality.

What are your plans for future growth?
My overall goal is to become director of nursing at a pediatric organization. I would like to impart my passion and drive to help others, to other nurses.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy leading a team to positive change in addition to spearheading new initiatives for the college.

Do you have a personal tidbit to share?
"For fun", I teach the capstone class for nurses pursuing their Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I also volunteer at the Wildlife Center of Texas, and love feeding baby squirrels!

What is your community involvement/service?
