“People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But people will never forget how you made them feel.”
– Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou’s powerful words are even more important in today’s ever-changing and often chaotic healthcare environment. Her words hold a sincere message that care (regardless of this chaos and change) must be patient focused with unyielding compassion and emotion. In evolving environments, a supportive culture is the driving force behind incomparable care. Every patient and patient family member is looking for care that is seamless and trustworthy; care that is centered around consistency and creative individualized approaches that meet their needs and expectations. This creates a special and unexpected moment that everyone deserves as we provide courageous, convicted, and consumer-focused care to all hospital guests that include patients, families, visitors, vendors, physicians, and even staff. To achieve a lasting culture centered around all guests, every element of care must be personalized and authentic.

Director, District 8 Texas Organization for Nursing Leadership

In March 2019, I wrote an article in TONL Monthly entitled, “Creating a San Antonio Nursing Consortium: Rethinking and Reshaping Professional Organizations” (Tuazon, 2019). The major premise of the article was to highlight the significance and importance of joining a professional organization. It also emphasized the duty of professional nurses to contribute to the advancement of the nursing profession by participating in professional associations (Cline et al., 2019; Matthews, 2012). Crumley (2020) and Gains (2019) reiterate the many benefits of actively engaging in nursing professional organizations including professional advancement, networking, and opportunities for advocacy efforts. Professional associations also offer honorific awards and recognitions. Such is the case with the San Antonio Nursing Consortium (SANC).

Managing patient populations in the community, amid the worldwide COVID pandemic, has had a significant effect on community organizations and the populations they serve. The impact has a ripple effect in multiple directions, one of which is related to nursing education. An example of the impact can be seen with the Capstone project required as a clinical assignment for MSN nursing administration students at the University of Texas in Arlington.
In this Year of the Nurse 2021 and in the midst of this unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, TONL is thrilled to recognize the many heroes making a difference in your organizations. These TONL heroes demonstrate selfless dedication and commitment to their profession in the most difficult of circumstances. Thank you for all you are doing on the front lines of the COVID-19 response!

Education and Events
TONL colleagues,

On behalf of the TONL education committee and with the approval of the TONL board, we have made the difficult decision to postpone our Feb TONL annual conference.

In early fall of 2020, we had elected to move the 2021 conference to a virtual platform to promote social distancing. Despite this, the pandemic continues to surge in Texas, and we are concerned this may impact our ability to give the full attention and support that this wonderful conference deserves.  Our goal is to make sure we have a strong attendance that our sponsors and speakers deserve.

The committee has agreed to move the dates to April 28 – 30, 2021, and we have worked with our vendors and speakers to accommodate this change. Please visit the TONL website for more information.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Stay safe and be well
