Certificate in Nursing Administration

Potential applicants: BSN Nurses currently in a front line and middle management position who do not yet have a Master’s in Nursing.

Emerging leaders promoted into leadership positions are often in roles in which they are developing competencies required of the role. Many have considered, but have not yet committed to an MSN Program. A Certificate Program is now available within the MSN Nursing Admin Program in which BSN nurses can attain a “Certificate in Nursing Administration” from the University of Texas at Arlington without committing to a degree plan in Nursing Administration.  The program requires completion of 12 academic hours of specified courses within the MSN Program – Management, Leadership, Finance and Roles of the Nurse Administrator. Upon completion the student receives the Certification, and is also eligible to transfer the courses into the MSN Nursing Administration Program. If the student transitions to a degree plan for a Master’s in Nursing Administration – next courses are Theory, Research and Evidence-Based Practice, then following are the additional courses required of the Master’s Program – Operations, Policy, Management Seminar and an elective.

Post Master’s Certificate in Nursing Administration

Potential applicants: Master’s prepared nurses who’s degree is not a Master’s in Nursing – ie – Master’s in Business Administration and Master’s in Health Care Administration.

Many current nurse administrations have a graduate degree in a field other than Nursing which poses a barrier to teaching in Schools of Nursing or entering DNP Programs. The Post Certificate Course in Nursing Administration provides a certificate that is equivalent to an MSN in Nursing Administration. To determine which courses need to be taken – a Gap Analysis is completed by the Program Director. Course work covered in previous degreed programs will not need to be repeated.  However, there is a minimum number of courses required – 12 hours are required by UTA for the Certificate. Upon completion of the program, the student receives the Post-Master’s Certificate and may ‘walk’ with other Graduates during the Graduation Ceremonies.

However, if a TONE member is interested in any specific questions regarding the content within the Certificate Programs, you are welcome to contact Cynthia Plonien, MSN Admin Program Director through email – plonien@uta.edu.  In addition, if a health care organization would like to register staff members into the Nursing Administration Certificate program in the same cohort, that can be arranged.
