The U.S. electricity grid is undeniably in crisis. As rolling blackouts over Christmas demonstrated, no corner of the country is immune. Regions that were supposed to be safe from power shortfalls found themselves unable to keep the lights on. Tens-of-millions of other ratepayers got the unexpected present of emergency alerts asking them to dial back demand.

More than 20 million American households (1 in 6) are struggling to meet their home energy bills, the worst crisis National Energy Assistance Directors Association (NEADA) has ever documented. The collective amount owed has doubled from the end of 2019 to now.

Industry News

More than half of U.S. critical minerals are currently supplied by China. Despite the growing demand for rare earth minerals, the U.S. only has one rare earth mine remaining and must ship its ore to China for processing. As the need for minerals grows, so does the risk of forming a minerals cartel similar to the one OPEC created to boost oil prices.

According to the North American Electricity Reliability Corp., much of the country’s electric grid is at a high risk of emergency operating conditions this winter. Renewable energy efforts are contributing to the problem. High penetration of renewable power on electricity grids has become a defining challenge.

Safety

Followers of mine safety and health trends can now access data and statistics updated through 2021 on the NIOSH website. The updates are based on data files obtained from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). NIOSH provides the statistics though the interactive Mine and Mine Worker Charts web application. The underlying data are also provided in downloadable files in self-documenting SPSS format and (newly for this release) Microsoft Access format.

The U.S. Department of Labor today announced that its Miner Safety and Health app for iOS and Android devices that provides timely information directly to miners is now available in Spanish. The Miner Safety and Health app provides miners with a tool to use while working at mines and outside of working hours to review best mine safety and health practices, find resources on miners’ rights and responsibilities, and report hazardous work condition complaints.
Recruitment and Hiring

Mike Parent knows 2023 will test the mining industry. After spending more than 25 years in the sector, the vice president of prevention services at Workplace Safety North has the experience and foresight to recognize the safety obstacles that lie ahead. And he says one of the biggest hurdles will be attracting and training skilled workers.
Legislative Update

America needs to adopt a bold strategy to ramp up mining. The aim should be to solve a major problem in the fight against climate change — a shortage of minerals vital to clean energy technologies like electric cars and transmission systems for renewable power.
