Features

While environmental improvement is a noble goal and practical imperative, following in the energy footsteps of Europe will have dire consequences for the United States, which has vast deposits of hydrocarbons. Not only would this drive up energy prices, but it would also choke the lifeblood out of the Texas economy and have devastating effects for hundreds of thousands of Texas families.

Tesla's proposed project comes amid soaring lithium prices due to strong demand for the component, essential for making electric batteries. U.S. electric car maker Tesla is studying the possibility of building a lithium refinery in Texas and is seeking tax breaks from the state to complete the project.

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, has been selected by Resolution Copper Mining LLC (Resolution Copper) to deliver a US$16 million feasibility study providing engineering and technical services for the Resolution Copper mine in Superior, Arizona. The proposed underground mine has the potential to be one of the largest producers of copper in North America—supplying up to 25% of US copper demand each year.

Industry News

Dispatchable fuel diversity has long provided a shield to electricity consumers from fuel price spikes. But that optionality is eroding in much of the U.S. – or is already gone – as the coal fleet is pushed off the grid. Years of warnings about the potential pain to consumers should natural gas prices spike, and coal no longer be available as an alternative, have become a brutally expensive reality

The electric vehicle revolution is here, and the United States must now make a choice. If we do nothing or not enough to break our dependence on China for battery metals like lithium and nickel, we face an uncertain future leading to the loss of electric vehicle (EV) production and other advanced technologies that can underpin our manufacturing sector, our energy security and our efforts to slash carbon emissions.

Coal slurry. Fly ash. Incinerated garbage. Grass. What if these and other materials could be turned into electric cars, solar panels, and smartphones? Researchers in Virginia Tech's Department of Mining and Minerals Engineering are working to give companies and innovators stable, sustainable, domestic supplies of the critical minerals needed for a thriving economy and a green energy future.

Regulatory Update

President Biden and Congress recognize that to deliver the transformation they’ve promised, the U.S. must improve the federal environmental review and permitting process so that it’s more efficient and effective. Otherwise, the U.S. will sit on the sidelines as other countries take the lead in global energy and minerals supply chains.
Safety

There’s a new free app available now to help miners receive important information directly from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Miners can use the app to know and understand their rights and responsibilities as miners, to search and use best safety and health practices and to receive notifications of accidents in the mining community.
Reclamation

A recent study conducted by Brazilian researchers and reported on by the São Paulo Research Foundation demonstrated the potential of Southern cattail for use in the sustainable rehabilitation of areas affected by iron ore mine tailings.
Recruitment and Hiring

Total US coal production rose in the second quarter of 2022 compared to a year earlier, and a sustained rise in demand for the fuel used in domestic and power generation allowed companies to increase their worker head counts, S&P Global Market Intelligence reports.
Technology

The energy transition requires critical minerals. Though the U.S. has plentiful resources of its own, the country has largely relied on foreign sources. That’s in part because one major roadblock to accessing American critical mineral deposits is that they remain largely unmapped. That may be about to change, though.
