New York Times best-selling author of The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels draws on the latest data and new insights to challenge everything you thought you knew about the future of energy. Alex Epstein’s latest book argues that a combination of using more fossil fuels, getting better at "climate mastery", and establishing "energy freedom" policies to promote nuclear and other truly promising alternatives will help forge a brighter energy future.
A group of 19 Texas science teachers learned how industrial minerals enhance our daily lives and support Texas’ tremendous growth. Learn how you can join in and/or support these award-winning Teacher Workshops!

Heavy rainfalls, withering droughts and other extreme weather patterns across the globe are denting miners’ profits and crimping supply of iron ore, copper and other minerals as climate change roils yet another industry. It is an unusual situation for companies that have experience operating anywhere in the world, include miles underground and at the tops of mountains and in places where temperatures range from 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38°C) to 0F (minus 18°C).

Grocery and gas prices soared as inflation hit a 40-year high in the U.S. High energy prices and continued supply chain woes have complicated the Biden administration’s attempts to transition our energy portfolio to support its climate commitments. But one thing is clear: the success of our future energy transition rests on a robust supply of minerals. The U.S. could face years of supply chain shortages and disruptions if we continue business as usual.

USA Rare Earth owns an 80% interest in the Round Top Heavy Rare Earth, Lithium, and Critical Minerals Project located in Hudspeth County, West Texas. With its development of the first rare earth and critical minerals processing facility in the United States, and ownership of the only permanent neo magnet manufacturing system in the Western Hemisphere, USARE is poised to become the leading domestic supplier of critical raw materials fueling the green tech revolution. The company's materials and technologies are critical to electric vehicles, green energy, consumer electronics, and the defense industry. The battery grade lithium and tech metals are necessary for chipsets, semiconductors, and 5G.
Industry News

An estimated 476 million metric tons of construction aggregates were produced and shipped for consumption in the first quarter of 2022, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). This estimated total represents a 4.1 percent increase over the first quarter of 2022.

Critical minerals are key to a lot of sustainability goals: solar panels, wind turbines and batteries, for grid storage and vehicles. But the United States is passing up a prime opportunity to get them. The European Union and 167 countries are working out rules this month governing the mining of deep-sea deposits, some of the richest sources of manganese, cobalt, copper and nickel that are ingredients in solar panels, wind turbines and electric-vehicle batteries. But the U.S. can’t take advantage of them because it’s never had enough political support to ratify the U.N.’s 1982 Convention on the Law of the Sea, which governs the use of ocean resources.

Safety

A look at the progress, and path forward for industrial safety programs. If manufacturing companies want to limit the safety hazards on the factory floor, they should look at adopting 24/7 continuous monitoring systems that will be able to detect and alert you of accidents before they happen. The investment in a safety management system can help you save untold dollars while keeping your workers safe.

The top priority at MSHA is keeping miners safe. An increase in fatalities and injuries this year could have been prevented with proper training. It is up to mine operators to ensure that miners are fully trained and able to take time to follow best safety practices that can prevent deadly accidents.
Recruitment and Hiring

Luisa Moreno, president and director of the Canadian rare earth mining company Defense Metals, rattles off the ages of some of her colleagues. Their chief metallurgist, who consults for the company, is 81. A petrologist and geologist, who serves as a part-time expert advisor, is in his late 80s. One of their directors, a mineralogist specializing in rare earths, is 80-something. "This is a major, major problem," said Moreno.
Technology

Scientists at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) together with Lithium Australia have developed a new technology that is able to extract up to 95% of the lithium locked up in spodumene ore – the rocks that the metal is extracted from before it is processed into batteries.
Legislative Update

U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said the government is concerned that supplies of critical minerals, used widely in clean energy technology, could be subject to weaponisation as oil and gas have been amid the Ukraine conflict.
