The electric reliability issues that plagued our two most populous states are harbingers of a much larger reliability equation the U.S. as a whole must solve in the coming decade, if not sooner. So, what’s the equation, and what’s the solution?

If you can afford a Tesla, you probably find it hard to imagine that there are some 3.5 billion people on Earth who have no reasonably reliable access to electricity. Even less obvious may be the way rich countries’ pursuit of carbon neutrality at almost any cost limits economic opportunities for the world’s poor and poses serious geopolitical risks to the West.

Industry News

President Biden’s goal of achieving zero-carbon electricity by 2035 faces huge obstacles, which make the goal unrealistic. Read a sample of concerns about the goal and some of the obstacles to achieving it.

Americans are significantly more worried about the energy situation in the U.S. than they have been in a decade. Nearly half of Americans, 47%, say they worry a great deal about the availability and affordability of energy. This is up from 37% a year ago and is more than double the percentage in 2020, when energy concern was at its low point in Gallup's trend.

Safety

Because of the inherent dangers of mining, safety training is important. In the mining industry, virtual and augmented reality is being used to replace outdated and ineffective training with more effective immersive experiences
Recruitment and Hiring

There’s a big need in our industry to build a new pipeline of talent for the long term. The best way to do that is to increase interest both in our industry, and the skill sets needed for new types of jobs that will be available in the future – the industry is changing.
Technology

A house completely made out of coal is being developed by US-based company X-MAT and may be partially ready by 2023. According to the firm, which is the advanced materials division of industrial engineered materials provider Semplastics, over the past year, it has been able to perfect the bricks, blocks, facades, panels, and roof tiles that comprise all the components needed to construct the building.
Legislative Update

President Joe Biden is asking Congress for more money to help Ukraine — and the U.S. mining industry. Biden is asking Congress for an additional $33 billion to help Ukraine and address other global needs. The request also has an ask for more money to help expand domestic production of critical minerals. The funds — $500 million — will go to the Defense Department for use under the Defense Production Act, a 1950 law Biden invoked last month to liberate more funding for early-stage mining projects that could produce metals for lithium-ion batteries.
