Back to Galveston! If you attended the Annual Meeting in 2019, you’ll remember that golf and fishing were completely rained out. Not this year as we had beautiful weather. Couple that with visiting with old acquaintances and call it a good meeting.

TMRA is proud to have announced its 2021 Legislators of the Year: Rep. Kyle Kacal and Rep. Chris Paddie. Thank you for your strong support of Texas miners, who strive every day to deliver the lignite, uranium and industrial minerals that make possible our 21st century lifestyles.

Industry News
A recently released federal report shows coal-fired electricity generation is estimated to increase this year for the first time since 2014. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s "Short-Term Energy Outlook" report, there is expected to be 22% more U.S. coal-fired generation in 2021 than in 2020 — largely as a result of increased natural gas prices caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Regulatory Update

Read the latest issue of American COAL, which focuses on the choices and consequences of coal.
Safety

The San Miguel Lignite Mine (SMLM), which is owned by San Miguel Electric Cooperative, Inc. (SMEC), has received a prestigious national mining award for achieving 470,304 employee hours worked without a lost workday injury at its lignite mine in Christine, Texas.
Technology

The NIOSH Mine Safety and Health Technology Innovations Award recognizes mines and companies that have made an extraordinary effort to apply technology or improve processes in innovative ways, above and beyond mandatory requirements, to improve mine worker safety and health.
Legislative Update

The National Mining Association (NMA) issued the following statement applauding the Supreme Court’s decision to grant writs of certiorari in litigation related to the decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit (D.C. Circuit) to vacate the Affordable Clean Energy (ACE) rule.
It’s a good thing for American energy consumers that John Kerry doesn’t set domestic energy policy. While he believes the U.S. won’t be using coal by 2030, coal is proving just how essential it remains to the nation’s energy security as well as the reliability and the affordability of our energy supply.
The recently passed $1 trillion infrastructure bill is estimated to be the largest investment in the nation’s roads and bridges since the creation of the Interstate Highway System in the 1950s. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which recently received final congressional approval and is expected to be signed by President Joe Biden in the coming days, is good news for the state’s coal industry, according to West Virginia Coal Association President Chris Hamilton.
