Top 5 Reasons to Get Social

By Christian Goff, TMRA Outreach Contractor

Like most associations of its kind, TMRA has a limited amount of time and resources to devote to promoting its story to key audiences. Because of that, TMRA decided in 2018 to launch a social media program, which is a cost-effective way to help enhance the Texas mining industry’s image. Through its Facebook and Twitter channels, TMRA is able to help raise awareness of the association’s three member industries – coal, uranium and industrial minerals.

Social media is a readily available tool that can be used by anyone. In fact, the more industry members choose to participate, the more the industry’s messages will be heard (and seen) by those who need to learn why mining matters.

To disseminate industry’s messages quickly and easily, we encourage all TMRA members to take advantage of this easy-to-use communications tool.

Here are the top 5 reasons why social media is important to YOU!

1.      Ensures consistent and cohesive messaging
Disseminating images and science-based messages and content through social media can help change perceptions and be an excellent and effective way to engage with those who may not be fully aware of the important role mining plays in our daily lives. Think of a before-and-after reclamation photo. How did it make you feel? Surprised? Impressed? Happy?

2.      Builds industry awareness
Social media can help engage, educate and influence target audiences that are unaware of the industry’s benefits to the state and the Texas economy.

3.      ‘Humanizes’ the industry
The mining industry gets a bad rap. Oftentimes, it is because opponents don’t take into consideration the human component of the industry that they are bashing: hardworking people like you who go to work every day to help provide the energy and infrastructure that we all rely on.

4.      Establishes TMRA and its members as thought leaders
Social media helps position TMRA as the primary, expert resource for the Texas’ mining industry – influence that can extend to your company when you participate.

5.      Increases visits to your website
If you’re looking to create awareness of your products or services, social media can help. Sharing relevant news about the industry, or your own offerings, can bring visitors to your website, which can raise awareness and increase sales.

In summary, to effectively leverage the scale and power of social media with the goal of continuing to advance our industry’s public relations goals and objectives, membership participation is a vital component in which each and every one of you can play an important role.
