For ALL TMRA Members, whether Owner/Operator or Support, we all know and understand the importance of both “talking the talk” and “walking the walk” when it comes to safety. So why devote an eNewsletter issue to the topic? Because a focus on safety NEVER hurts. A focus can provoke thought, awareness and yes, even action. Whether I’m privileged to visit a mining operation or whether those opportunities are given to Teachers, Legislators, Local Officials and others, what is consistent is the introduction and reminder on safety policies, procedures and practices. In my experience over 45ish years, this is always the practice, even a requirement prior to any tour of operations.

These safety policies and procedures apply equally to Consultants, Contractors and State/Federal Agency Staff that frequent these operations. Why? One the one hand it is just obvious to those paying attention that mining and power generation facilities have some inherently dangerous conditions. These are minimized and protected against but, for sure, they are real. It is also important to Mine and Facility Owner/Operators that their premises and operations are safe. Not just because MSHA, OSHA, the Railroad Commission and others are “watching,” but because Owner/Operators, certainly TMRA Member Owner/Operators, understand, BY THE NUMBERS, that:
(1) Safety lowers the risk of harm to employees, contractors and guests;
(2) lessens the wear, tear and risk of down time with equipment;
(3) prevents or at least lowers the chances of receiving Notices of Violation which can cost both time and dollars, and;
(4) IS GOOD BUSINESS.

A Safe Operation through consistent procedures, policy and training carries over to greater opportunities for “Success,” however you define it.

Take care and be safe!
