Cleveland, TN - Cleveland Utilities recently hosted Utility Board Member Training for several southeast Tennessee board members from various utilities. "Cleveland Utilities is very grateful for the opportunity to host these mandatory trainings sessions for the benefit of our own board members as well as others in the surrounding area. The course material is useful and informative, and the instructors have made the sessions interesting. Thank you TMEPA and MTAS,"said Aubrey Ector, Chairman, Cleveland Utilities.

The Municipal Technical Advisory Service (MTAS) provided the training which complies with the current state law (Public Chapter No. 118) which requires municipal utility board members with water and wastewater services to receive 12 hours of annual training. Module A (Board Governance and Policy Making) was delivered on January 19, Module B (Financial Oversight) on February 2, and Module C (Water and Wastewater Regulations & Challenges and Ethics & Open Meetings) on March 9. The training is designed to provide board members with a greater overall knowledge of the intricacies of board governance and develop a broader understanding of their roles and responsibilities as board members.

The training was well received by the 19 board members in attendance. Tom Hughes, Vice Chairman, Athens Utilities Board, stated "I have found the MTAS water and waste water training to be an excellent tool for Directors of local Utilities and Districts. It is refreshing to hear issues that are important to all Utilities discussed in an open forum by your peers in the industry." The training proved to be beneficial while meeting the requirement of the state law.

In addition to the MTAS training hosted at Cleveland, Jackson Energy Authority is partnering with the State Comptroller’s Office to provide Utility Board Member Training on March 1, 2018 at Jackson Energy Authority, Jackson, TN. If you need any assistance in meeting the required training, please contact TMEPA to help coordinate training through one of these services.
