Taking the research on distracted driving into account, the experts from the Craig Hospital in Denver’s Driving and Adaptive Transportation program have provided 10 tips to help you take action against distracted driving.
- Pay attention.
- Avoid distractions like texting, talking on the phone, or playing games while driving.
- Put your phone away when driving.
- Pull over and park in a safe location if a call or text is absolutely necessary.
- Change your voicemail greeting to inform callers you are driving and will return their call when its safe to do so. Install an app to block texts, calls, and other alerts when driving, turn on “do not disturb" or airplane mode.
- Discourage others from calling or texting you while you’re driving.
- Have passengers manage your phone for you.
- Prepare before you drive. Review maps, adjust your radio, eat, and make any phone calls before you drive.
- Request phone-free driving when you are a passenger.
- Model safe driving behavior.

You may have seen the recent article submitted to Texas Asphalt Magazine by Longview Asphalt detailing their project US 59 in Harrison County. If you haven’t, I urge you to check it out.
We want to feature other great projects, so we are calling on our members for submissions
Do you have a recent project you are especially proud of? Send us the following details:
- What is the size of the project?
- When was it built?
- What are some unique attributes of the project that readers will find interesting? (For example, is it a test section, does it utilize new technology, is it replacing a road constructed of another material, is a special project such as a racetrack or runway?)
- Pictures! High-resolution images of the project are a must.
If your project is selected, we will ask for a write-up about the project (can be brief or more in-depth, like this example).
You may consider including the following:
- Materials: Tell us about the mix-design and the materials in the design; the materials-provider
- Specifications: Tell us about your QC/QA test results at the plant and in the field; mix production quality and mat quality
- Constructability: Tell us your biggest success and your biggest challenge with constructability
