This new Asphalt Institute clinic provides focused and detailed guidance on constructing asphalt pavements for Federal Aviation Administration funded airfield pavement projects. Participants will take a deep-dive into the design and production of asphalt mixtures, focusing on the current FAA P-401 specification. Discussion topics will include material specifications, construction guidance, and quality control considerations to construct long-life asphalt pavements in the commercial and general aviation environment.

The clinic will be based on the latest version of AC 150/5370-10 (10H released in December 2018). Focus will be placed on the key asphalt-related specification sections necessary for contractors, inspectors, airport staff, engineers, etc.

This 1.5-day course will be held in Hurst, Texas Feb. 14-15, 2019

The First Annual Managing Asphalt Pavements or MAPS for Local Governments is specifically designed to help local governments—city and county engineers, project managers, maintenance supervisors, inspectors, and paving supervisors, consulting engineers, quality control/quality assurance personnel— and related stakeholders successfully manage their asphalt paving projects efficiently and effectively while juggling myriad responsibilities. This in-depth asphalt-intensive offers four educational tracks and general sessions featuring some of the most authoritative voices in the industry including Dave Newcomb, Danny Gierhart, Harold Von Quintus, Chuck Fuller, and Larry Welch.

Dear TXAPA Members,

I personally invite you to attend our first annual MAPS for Local Governments Conference and Technology Showcase. Just as we’ve met with our TxDOT Partners in Quality for over 40 years, 2019 marks TXAPA’s commitment to serving our City and County Partners. MAPS is an acronym for Managing Asphalt Pavements. We’ve planned two days of content focused to city and county engineers, planners, project managers, and consulting, engineering and inspection firms.

If you haven’t already seen the MAPS email and print advertising, we’ve got a premier lineup of industry voices. Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) expert Harold Von Quintus, P.E., Asphalt Institute Senior Regional Engineer Danny Gierhart, P.E., and Dr. Dave Newcomb, P.E. Division Head, Materials and Pavements at Texas A&M Transportation Institute are confirmed to present several of the breakout sessions. Dr. Newcomb will also lead a panel discussion titled 10 Questions to Ask a CE&I Firm. TXAPA's Chuck Fuller will present Quality Begins at the Pre-Paving Meeting and TXAPA's Larry Welch will lead a special session for road crews on day two.

Along with our main content, MAPS will feature plenty of networking opportunities including a cocktail reception at the close of day one. We will also host the MAPS Technology Showcase which will be located central to meals and breaks for maximum exposure. Like the Associate Member Expo at our Annual Meeting, the showcase is a chance for city and county personnel and TXAPA Associate Members to connect.

To register for the Technology Showcase click here.

We urge ALL TXAPA members to register to attend MAPS and invite at least one of your City or County Partners in Quality. The registration fee is $45/both days or $25/single day. You may register your City and County Partners as your guests or simply direct them to TexasAsphalt.org/maps-2019. This is truly a great opportunity to strengthen your connection to this valuable owner segment.

We’re hosting the first MAPS February 27-28, 2019 in Grapevine, Texas conveniently located near DFW Airport. TXAPA is offering a special Group Rate at the event venue Courtyard by Marriott Dallas DFW Airport North/Grapevine. The Group Rate is available until February 13, 2019 so pass along the attached flyer to your city and county partners as soon as you can.

To reserve rooms at the TXAPA Group Rate click here.

If you have any questions about registration for the meeting or showcase, or about MAPS in general, please contact TXAPA Director of Marketing, Emily Adams. The plan is for MAPS to become an annual event for TXAPA Members and City and County Partners. The more our City and County Partners know, the better for quality asphalt pavements in Texas!

Sincerely,

Bill Thomas, Angel Brothers Enterprises
2019 TXAPA President

We generally recognize that effective compaction is the single most critical variable in placing quality asphalt pavement with an extended pavement life. In cold weather, proper compaction requires the perfect balance of temperature and time. In our Cold Weather Paving Webinar, we will review best practices for paving during the winter months and provide tips for balancing time and temperature.
