Up Front
On Saturday December 1, TXAPA welcomed more than 50 students from five Texas universities— University of Texas at Austin, University of Texas at El Paso, University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas State, Texas Tech— and the University of Oklahoma for the Second Annual Asphalt Road-eo. Competitors were tasked with creating an asphalt slab that would score highly in the areas of skid, rutting, and cracking resistance. In addition, each team presented to a panel of judges who then tested the teams with in-depth questions about their mix-design. The highest scoring teams won first and second place with a tie for third.

This year UTEP swept the competition taking first and second place! Texas Tech and OU rounded out the winners' circle in a tie for third place.

First Place: UTEP Miner Girls (From left: Mayra Reyna, Angelica Torres, and Alexandra Torres, not pictured)

Second Place: UTEP Orange Picks (Luis Cordoba, Getsemani Molinar, Elias Valdez)

Third Place: Texas Tech FLT (Christopher Saldana, Joshua Randolph, Grant Jimenez, Jessica Butler)

Third Place: OU Asphalt (Dominique Pittenger, Anita Zelada Espinoza, Yocelin Piedra, Kevin Lepissier, Blake Gerard)

Please join us in Congratulating our winners and all the students who participated!

Special Thank You to our sponsors and to the Texas Asphalt Pavement Association Scholarship Program for providing a $1,000 scholarship to the first place team.

We generally recognize that effective compaction is the single most critical variable in placing quality asphalt pavement with an extended pavement life. In cold weather, proper compaction requires the perfect balance of temperature and time.

MultiCool is a user-friendly application that calculates the rate of cooling in an HMA mat during construction. It requires that the user input such items as the time of day (entered automatically according to the computer's clock), latitude, air temperature, wind speed, mix information and lift thickness for each HMA lift, type of material being paved over, its temperature and whether or not the soil or base are frozen. The program then computes how quickly each lift of HMA will cool and when the next lift may be placed. This allows field personnel to make decisions concerning cold weather paving and the scheduling of HMA deliveries to the paving site.
The ultimate goal of our webinars is to help our audience understand more about working with asphalt to produce high-quality roads with longer service life, so it's fitting that we conclude our Texas Asphalt Pavement User Guide Series with a webinar on award-winning asphalt pavements. What are they and how do you achieve award-winning quality on your project? Tune in to this webinar to find out!

In The Works
February 27 and 28, 2019 in Dallas, Texas

TXAPA's Associate Member Committee Chair Kyle Riggs of Texas Lime Company is working with fellow associate members to plan a two day conference for local governments, consulting engineers, paving crews, and anyone tasked with managing city and county roads or asphalt paving projects. The first day of the conference, called Managing Asphalt Pavements for Local Governments, or MAPs, will feature two engineer-focused tracks on materials and design. Day two will feature a paving and compaction track for road crews and "boots on the ground" employees and another track featuring the same material adapted to an engineer's perspective.

The meeting is planned for February 27-28, 2019 and will take place in the City of Dallas, Texas. TXAPA has plans to produce the meeting regionally choosing a different city each year to host. With MAPs, TXAPA hopes to enable local governments to better utilize asphalt from planning and design to finished project. Dave Newcomb of the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI), Harold Von Quintus of Applied Research Associates, Inc.and Danny Gierhart of the Asphalt Institute have committed to speak at the event.
