Level 1B HMA Roadway Specialist Certification One-Day Class and Training

The Level 1B Roadway Specialist certification class is one day that prepares the individual to properly monitor and conduct Quality Control / Quality Assurance testing for the placement of asphaltic mixes on the roadway. Upon completion of the certification class, the individual will have the knowledge and basic understanding for setting rolling patterns, monitoring temperatures, identifying and correcting segregation, marking core locations using random number sampling, proper coring and trimming procedures and learning best practices for the placement procedures. A score of 80% or higher on the written exam is necessary to obtain certification.

  • Tex-244-F Thermal Profile of Hot Mix Asphalt
  • Tex-246-F Permeability of Water Flow of Hot Mix Asphalt
  • Tex-500-C Sampling Bituminous Materials, Pre-Molded Joint Fillers and Joint Sealers (Parts II and III)
  • Item 341 Dense-Graded Hot-Mix Asphalt

Level 1B Training

The Level 1B Training class is a four day class that includes the test procedures above and prepares technicians to have a basic understanding and knowledge for setting rolling patterns, monitoring temperatures, identifying and correcting segregation, marking core locations using random number sampling, proper coring and trimming procedures and learning best practices for the placement procedures. THERE IS NO CERTIFICATION FOR THIS COURSE.

Pre-certification: There are no pre-certification requirements for the Level 1B Certification or Training Program.

Re-certification: Every three (3) years all Level 1B Roadway Specialists are required to re-certify. Re-certification consists of attending the one day certification class. A Specialist can re-certify up to one year prior to the expiration date. If certification expires the specialist may not perform any Level 1B responsibilities on a TxDOT project and will be required to attend a Level 1B Certification class to re-certify.

Federally Mandated Annual Proficiency: The Federally Mandated Annual Proficiency Program is not required for the Level 1B Roadway Specialist.

Level 1B Exemption: There is no exempt status for the Level 1B Roadway Specialist.
