Asphalt Marketing: New fact sheets have been released to help explain pavement–vehicle interaction (PVI) factors that influence fuel economy. Three factors are commonly considered when engineers look at the interactions between a pavement and a vehicle that affect drivability: roughness, texture, and deflection. A recent PEC-supported project completed by NCAT, "Effects of Pavement Properties on Vehicular Rolling Resistance: A Literature Review" (http://goaspha.lt/1DcLFXX), examines the scientific literature exploring these three factors and how much each contributes to PVI. Of the three, NCAT found a clear consensus as to the influence of roughness and texture; however, the studies show no more than a minimal connection between deflection and fuel economy.
