SAFETY TOPIC - MOTORCYCLES

Print Print this Article | Send to Colleague

This month’s safety topic will focus on Motorcycles and the awareness we need to spread to help protect them and ourselves. With spring and warmer temperatures arriving, we are seeing our friends and family getting their bikes out and taking rides across our road system. Over the past week listening to the radio I have heard of multiple fatalities just in the Austin area. This prompted me to start researching more into this topic and the following is what I found. Austin has had five deaths since January 1, with four happening the last week of March. Where do most motorcycle crashes happen? An estimated 31 percent happen in rural areas and 69 percent happen in urban areas. The top eight cities where Motorcycle crashes occurred in order from on to eight were Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Fort Worth, Arlington and Corpus Christi. The top four things most likely to distract drivers in order from one to four were cell phones, eating, loud noises (ex. music) and grooming. I thought these were very interesting and disturbing at the same time. I feel that as an industry, if each of our members would have a short safety toolbox talk on this subject maybe we could help save a life one by one.
