Superpave Aggregates

Print Print this Article | Send to Colleague

Longer lasting asphalt pavements! That is what we as an industry and TxDOT are trying to achieve therefore we must raise the bar on our mixes and materials to obtain these types of results. TXAPA will be an educational freeway of information; please don’t hesitate to call or ask questions.

Over the next months we will focus on changes you will see in the Superpave specification (item 344 & SS 3270) versus old dense-graded mixes (Item 341 & SS3268). This month the focus will be on aggregates, so let’s take a look and see what has changed. First the Los Angeles Abrasion has decreased from a 40% loss to 35% loss. The Soundness has decreased from a 30% loss to 25% loss. The Coarse Aggregate Angularity has increased from 85% to 95% if you’re using crushed gravel. Finally, last but not leastl the Deleterious Material decreased from 1.5% to 1.0%.

Once again, if you have any questions or would like to discuss further please give me a call!
