TXAPA’s 2012 City, County and Consultant Seminars

Print Print this Article | Send to Colleague

In late April and early May TXAPA presented four seminars that were intended for decision makers, roadway designers and pavement designers such as Directors of Public Works, Roadway Supervisors, City Engineers, County Engineers, Consulting Engineers, etc. interested in learning how asphalt pavements can be sustainable while at the same time economical. As an extension of TXAPA’s regular programs such as partners in quality meetings, brown bag lunches, etc. the seminars were a success.

The seminars demonstrated the engineering, economic and environmental benefits of asphalt pavement. Dr. Jon Epps, PhD, PE, Executive Associate Director Materials, Pavements and Constructed Facilities, Texas Transportation Institute (TTI); Dr. Dave Newcomb, PhD, TTI Senior Research Scientist Materials and Pavement Division; Harold Mullen, TXAPA Executive Vice President and David Kopp, TXAPA Director of Business Relations, all made presentations during these one-day seminars. The seminars were broken down into two overall areas, Engineering Strategies and Sustainable Asphalt Pavements. The topics included the following:

•    Engineering Strategies
o    Refresher on asphalt binder types and asphalt mix types
o    Thin mix overlay types, applications, construction practices and expectations
o    Perpetual pavements
o    Intersections
•    Sustainable Asphalt Pavements
o    Warm mix asphalt (WMA) pavement
o    Recycled asphalt pavement (RAP)
o    Recycled asphalt shingles (RAS)
o    Communication tools

The seminars were held in San Antonio, Houston and the Dallas/Fort Worth area in April 2012 and in Lubbock on April 24th, 25th, 26th and May 8th respectively. The presentations can be found on the new TXAPA Web page at http://texasasphalt.org under the "Education" portion of the homepage.  More specifically they can be found by clicking here.

Note that you will need to log in as a TXAPA member on the TXAPA Web page to see the seminar presentations. If you have any problems please call Stephanie Buckberry at (512) 312-2099.
