TXAPA would like to take this opportunity to encourage the TXAPA Membership to visit with the cities, counties and consultants in your respective business areas to help get the word out on these seminars.  These seminars are intended for decision makers, roadway designers, and pavement designers such as Directors of Public Works, Roadway Supervisors, City Engineers, County Engineers, Consulting Engineers, etc. who would be interested in learning how asphalt pavements can be sustainable while at the same time economical.

In 2012 the Texas Asphalt Pavement Association (TXAPA) plans to reach out to city, county and consultant engineers and planners across the state of Texas through a series of one day seminars which will demonstrate the engineering, economic and environmental benefits of asphalt pavement. Under the leadership of Dr. Jon Epps, PhD., P.E., Executive Associate Director Materials, Pavements and Constructed Facilities, Texas Transportation Institute (TTI), and Dr. Dave Newcomb, PhD., TTI Senior Research Scientist Materials and Pavement Division, a one day seminar (9:00am until 4:00pm) entitled "Engineering for Sustainable and Economical Pavements"  has been developed.

Dr. Epps and Dave Newcomb developed the seminar in consultation with Harold Mullen, Executive Vice President for TXAPA, and David Kopp, P.E., Director of Business Relations for TXAPA to insure that the seminar will cover timely informative topics relating to the asphalt paving industry.  The seminar will be broken down into two overall areas, Engineering Strategies and Sustainable Asphalt Pavements.  The topics included in the sections are as follows:

  • Engineering Strategies
    • Refresher on asphalt binder types and asphalt mix types
    • Thin mix overlay types, applications, construction practices and expectations
    • Perpetual pavements
    • Intersections
  •   Sustainable Asphalt Pavements
    • Warm mix asphalt (WMA) pavement
    • Recycled asphalt pavement (RAP)
    • Recycled asphalt shingles (RAS)
    • Communication tools

Presenters will include, but will not be limited to, Dr. Jon Epps, Dr. Dave Newcomb, Harold Mullen and David Kopp.  The seminars will be held in San Antonio, Houston, and the Dallas/Fort Worth area in April 2012 and in Lubbock on April 24th, 25th, 26th, and May 8th respectively.  For more information on the locations please visit the new TXAPA webpage and refer to the "Upcoming Events" portion of the homepage.
