Educational Toolkit Inserts, Continued

Last month I pointed out two inserts which are actually copies of articles from our Texas Asphalt magazine. They were entitled "Using Asphalt as a Green Pavement for LEED Credits" and "High Price HMA Going the Way of the Cave Man." This month I would like to point out two more APA-produced inserts. Both are very helpful when discussing our products and industry to locally elected officials, their staffs and consulting engineering firms. The first is entitled "Carbon Footprint: How Does Asphalt Stack Up?" This paper examines greenhouse gas production of asphalt and concrete pavements. It shows that in every case the analyses clearly indicate that asphalt has a far lower carbon footprint. This in turn shows that asphalt pavements are the more sustainable choice. The next insert I want you to be aware of is entitled "LCCA Express Software." This is software that has been developed that can help make life easier for engineers who perform life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) for pavements. The software is free from the Asphalt Pavement Alliance (APA) and uses principles recommended by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to compare the economics of alternative designs for a given roadway.
