Wellness in the Work We Do

Dear TAGITM Members,

As summer winds down and many of our communities send students and educators back to school, August offers us a reminder of new beginnings, fresh routines, and renewed energy. For many of us in the public sector IT, this season also marks the start of new projects, renewed initiatives, and preparations for the busy months ahead. What does your IT Master Plan (ITMP) have in store for you to do? I have a laundry list myself and looking forward to continuing the efforts that strengthen our cybersecurity posture, cybersecurity program, and cybersecurity culture.

Fittingly, August was recognized nationally as Wellness Month, and I encourage each of us to pause and consider what wellness means in our daily lives. As IT professionals, we are often focused on securing systems, supporting operations, and enabling innovation, but it’s equally important to make sure we care for ourselves and those around us.

Wellness is more than just physical health. It includes mental well-being, work-life balance, and the small acts of support we can offer to one another. If you notice a colleague or team member who seems stretched too thin, overwhelmed, or simply in need of encouragement, take a moment to reach out. A simple check-in can make all the difference. You don’t have to have all the answers, but being present can make a world of difference to someone.

On a personal note, I’ve taken on wellness as a new objective to improve both my health and leadership. I’ve started exercising regularly at HotWorx, which has been a great way not only to focus on my own fitness but also to work as a team with my wife as we encourage each other to be better. I’ve also made it a point to walk our dog more often, something small that helps me clear my head and reset during busy days. Let me hear about your health reset practices.

Another part of my wellness journey has been reading more books, which I’ve found both motivational and transformative for my leadership. Recently I’ve read Everyone Communicates, But Few Connect by John Maxwell (one of my favorite leadership authors) and The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins. Both have given me a new vision for how I lead, how I connect with others, and how I approach challenges. What are some of your favorite reads to share with everyone that you found beneficial?

TAGITM has always been about community, not only advancing technology but also supporting the people behind it. I am excited to see the changes coming on the horizon from the Membership committee focused on the regional meetings. Keep an eye on the listserv and social media for opportunities to get involved and refreshed with new ideas. Foster the relationships with peers and our industry partners, even if you do not purchase from them. You never know what may be sparked from that event that you can take back to solve in your own organization.

As we move into this new season, let’s keep wellness in focus: take care of yourself, and don’t hesitate to say something if you see someone who needs that same reminder. Together, we can build a stronger, healthier, and more resilient community of IT professionals.

Wishing you and your families a safe and successful back-to-school season, and a month filled with balance, wellness, and purpose.

Quick Wellness Reminders for IT Professionals

  • Step Away – Take short breaks throughout the day to clear your mind.
  • Prioritize Sleep – Rest is the foundation of resilience and clear decision-making.
  • Move Often – Even brief walks can boost focus and reduce stress.
  • Stay Connected – Check in with a peer, mentor, or team member — connection strengthens community.
  • Give Yourself Grace – Information Technology is demanding; remember, balance takes practice.
