As 2016 comes to an end, we look back on a year of progress, challenges and questions for the coming year. Are our extensive efforts toward new FLSA guidelines and the ACA going to be completely turned around in 2017? Will we see new social and economic policies that will bring new issues to deal with in the workplace? But resilience and flexibility are common traits of effective HR professionals, and we will have multiple opportunities to utilize our talents and capabilities in the coming year. One thing that is certain is that it will be an incredibly busy year for Human Resources.
The Texas Bay Area SHRM (TXBA SHRM) chapter was fortunate to have Lori Thomas and Cindy Jennings present the "Legislative Roadshow." They shared how HR professionals can have their voices heard by legislative officials and staff, and the impact they can have by joining the A-Team.

Texas legislators were elected on Tuesday, Nov. 8 and on Monday, Nov. 14 bills began rolling in. As of today, almost a thousand bills have been filed and some will have a significant impact on the way your lead your HR functions. Here's a small list of bills that we are tracking in this first month since the election.

The Volunteer Leader Resource Center (VLRC) website continues to be revamped and improved! One of the recent improvements includes a series of multi-media presentations designed for chapters to use as educational tools and/or programming which focuses on the SHRM Competency Model.
 
   
Mark your calendar for the Mid-Cities Human Resource Association (MCHRA) 10th annual employment law symposium scheduled for Wednesday, January 18, 2017, and presented by Jackson Lewis. The 2017 symposium will take place at the Ruthe Jackson Center in Grand Prairie. Registration information and topics will be available in December.
 
   
On December 8, we hosted a Holiday Mixer for our membership and collected tons of toys for the children at the Women's Shelter of South Texas. During the evening, anyone who brought an unwrapped toy received a raffle ticket. We were able to give away one trip to the 2017 Annual SHRM Conference and one trip to the 2017 HRSW Conference, a couple of SHRM annual dues and a couple of CBSHRM annual dues. It was a terrific way to end the year!

The stakes are higher today than they have ever been before regarding executive compensation and the scrutiny imposed by the federal and state governments and the national news media. Negative media reaction and public outcry in cases of executive compensation packages viewed as excessive, regardless as to whether or not they really are, has set the stage for government regulators, the Internal Revenue Service and State Attorney General Offices to investigate, audit and suppress abuses. As a result of their findings, more federal and state statutes and regulations concerning not-for-profit executive compensation are being enacted.
