ASHRAE, SPFA and many other supporting organizations urge continued support for the Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS), and requested continuing allocation of funding for CBECS to maintain progress on the 2012 edition of the Survey, even as EIA faces challenging funding reductions as a result of sequestration and lower congressional appropriations.

The American Chemistry Council (ACC) touted projections in a report by the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) showing that combining building efficiency improvements, made possible by innovations in chemistry, with lower-carbon fuels could lead to a 41% reduction in energy use and a 70% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Since its release in 2010, more than 6,000 individuals have accessed the Center for the Polyurethanes Industry’s (CPI) High-Pressure Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) Chemical Health and Safety Training program on www.spraypolyurethane.org. Now, CPI, in partnership with the Research Foundation for Health and Environmental Effects (RFHEE), is expanding its SPF training and stewardship efforts with the release of its new Low-Pressure SPF Chemical Health and Safety Training and the translation of the original high-pressure training program into Spanish.

SPFA’s 2013 Annual Convention and Expo was another record breaker. The show beat its last East Coast attendance record by 144 attendees.  The energy and commitment demonstrated at the show were fantastic, and excitement carried back into the industry with almost 400 new SPFA Professional Certification Program tests being taken. The 2013 RESNET Conference in Orlando, Fla., held Feb. 26-March 1, 2013, combined its sessions and exhibit hall with those of the Air Conditioning Contractors Association (ACCA) and the Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA) for a great event.  

SPFA delivered two exceptional and well-attended  sessions focusing upon a detailed explanation and walk-through of the SPFA’s new industry model Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for SPF, demonstrating the quantified benefits of SPF. The second session highlighted the advancement of the SPFA Professional Certification Program (PCP), elaborated upon the tracks and requirements, and generated great interest among the attendees. SPFA also exhibited in the combined exhibit hall and benefited from many discussions with the diverse audience.

(Nippon Aqua), a spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation company based in Yokohama, Japan, and that it has entered into a 10 year supply agreement with the company. Nippon Aqua is the SPF market leader in Japan, with business operations in over 30 locations across the country, and is a subsidiary of leading residential home builder Hinokiya Holdings Co. Ltd. The House on March 21 averted a looming government shutdown by approving legislation that will keep the government funded through the end of the fiscal year. The $984 billion spending bill passed by a vote of 318 to 109. The bill cleared the Senate on Wednesday on a vote of 73 to 26 and now heads to President Obama’s desk.

At the 2013 NAHB IBS show in Las Vegas, SPFA offered a compendium of spray foam technical, safety, contractor certification, and installation information of specific interest to home builders during one of the sessions, "What You Need to Know When Working with Spray Polyurethane Insulation for Residential Buildings." To accompany the session, a draft of the SPFA Builders Reference Handbook was released. The document is a draft and will evolve with input received from builders.
