RESNET is entering into a process to develop a standard that would provide guidance and a method of test to evaluate calibration methods. This effort will be based upon some of the “self-test” concepts developed within the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's Building Energy Simulation Test for Existing Buildings (BESTEST-EX).

The goal of this effort is to improve the accuracy and consistency of residential retrofit analysis by giving software developers a means to test how well various calibration methods work.

The chairman of the working group is Ron Judkoff of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

The sprayfoam industry as a whole is really coming into its own and we are beginning to see market penetrations we all knew were possible, if for too long unrealized. This increasing opportunity in all facets of construction – residential, commercial, institutional and federal – is something our industry has been working hard for decades to achieve. Many of us feel that SPF’s outstanding performance features and benefits are finally getting their due, and, if properly applied, living up to the hype!

SPF Tech
As the world’s interest in the iPhone 5 mushroomed in the weeks leading up to its launch, analysts at Opower – whose software helps homeowners make energy-efficient choices – wanted to see how smartphones measure up with other consumer electronics in energy use.

“Smartphones emerged as a clear winner in terms of energy efficiency compared to the devices we have historically used to consume entertainment and communicate with each other,” said Opower’s Barry Fischer, who wrote the in-depth blog post on the subject.

Federal/State Government News
Inaction in Congress and a potential swath of new federal regulation pose steep concerns for U.S. industry trying to plan ahead, writes Jim McTague. A rule to be considered in December by the Environmental Protection Agency, for example, could mean that parts of the U.S. are "closed for new business," said American Chemistry Council spokeswoman Anne Kolton.

A bill introduced into the Senate seeks to extend tax deductions for building upgrades, make it easier for taxpayers to get the deductions, and give more money back. The bipartisan legislation is called the Commercial Building Modernization Act (S.3591) and it would reform the existing Energy Efficient Commercial Building Tax Deduction, which is widely known by its federal tax code section: 179D.
