SPFA Safety Committee will host a members-only bi-monthly "Foam-It-Right"® Safety Webinar. The topic will be General Guidance on Disposal and Spill Clean-up of Spray Polyurethane Foam Chemicals, presented by Bill Robert of BASF.

This presentation will provide general guidance related to disposal of any remaining SPF chemicals, including best practices for disposing of drums containing SPF materials and review of hazard communication guidance such as, personal protective equipment, spill clean-up, and emergency response procedures.

In 2013, the SPFA Safety Committee developed two OSHA-compliant, bilingual jobsite safety signs. These included a Do Not Enter sign and a Fire Hazard sign.  The Do Not Enter sign should be placed at all entry points of the spray zone to provide adequate warning of the need for proper PPE.  The Fire Hazard sign should be placed throughout any area interior area with exposed SPF not protected with a fire protective covering or coating, to prevent ignition of exposed foam during construction.

In 2016, two more OSHA-compliant jobsite safety signs were added.  The first is the No Storage sign.  This sign should be prominently and permanently placed in all attics and crawlspace areas where the foam is not covered with an approved 15-minute thermal barrier.  It warns building owners that no storage is permitted in these areas.  The second new sign for Permit Confined Spaces, should be placed at the entry point of all Construction Confined Spaces, per the new OSHA regulations.

All four signs are provided as a color PDF and formatted for 8.5 x11 paper.  If a larger sign is needed, they can be scaled by changing the printer settings.  A single PDF file containing all four signs can be downloaded from the SPFA Members Only website.

I hope you are soaking up the sun now and using the unseasonable warm weather to your advantage. With this great weather, your teams should be getting better yield right now compared to last November, because, as we all know, cold weather absorbs heat from the spraying reaction and generally lowers yield.

SPFA Courses and Certification

Thanks to the generous donations of SPF Industry partners and the Sig Hall Memorial Scholarship Fund, the SPFA PCP will be offering FREE Field Exams at Sprayfoam 2017 in Palm Springs, CA. (See attached flyer for list of scholarship sponsors).

Candidates seeking certification as either an SPF Roofing Master Installer or an SPF Insulation Master Installer are required to successfully complete a field exam. Normally, Field Exams are $700-$1350. During Sprayfoam 2017 – they will be FREE!! This is the most expensive requirement in the SPFA Certification Program – so take advantage of this opportunity!

The Field Exams will be held on Sunday – Monday, January 29-30, 2017 in the parking lot adjacent to the Palm Springs Convention Center. Please see the attached flyer for more information and visit the website for details at www.sprayfoam.org

If you have any questions, contact Kelly Marcavage, Director of Certification at kmarcavage@sprayfoam.org

Be sure to check your email and respond to the SPFA PCP certification and accreditation renewal information which was sent earlier this month!

All SPFA Certification credentials expire on December 31, 2016 – so it is important to renew prior to that date so you stay current!

If you have any questions, please contact Crystal Dalgleish, the SPFA PCP Administrator at cdalgleish@spfapcp.org or call 866-222-5000.

Join Your Industry Partners in Making This Successful

The SPFA PCP Field Exam Marketing Working Group has launched the Scholarship Drive for Field Exams. The goal is to make Field Exams Free for those who take them at the Sprayfoam 2017 Convention & Expo in Palm Springs, CA. The Field Exams will be held on Sunday-Monday, January 29-30, 2017.

The funds from this campaign will be added to the Sig Hall Memorial Scholarship Fund for Field Exams which was established at Sprayfoam 2016. Since Sig, a Past President of SPFA, was instrumental in launching the first field exams held at an SPFA convention - it is fitting that we return to Palm Springs where he headed up the first Field Exams ever held at a Sprayfoam convention. In his memory, we'll offer scholarships to all SPF contractors so they can meet the PCP certification requirements to become certified SPF professionals!

Like last year, the cost of the field exams will be reduced through donations to the scholarship fund.

These ten companies have already signed up to be sponsors of the Scholarship Fund.

SPFA confirmed plans for the Field Exams to be held during Spray Foam 2017. The Field Exams will be held in the parking lot adjacent to the Renaissance Hotel/Palm Springs Convention Center. This location makes it convenient for Field Exam participants as well as convention attendees. Like last year, we will offer tours of the Field Exams giving visibility to the Field Exam sponsors and showing PCP participants what to expect in a Field Exam.

Last year we had record breaking participation in the Field Exams and we need your help to make 2017 equally successful!

SPFA PCP frequently gets phone calls from frantic contractors wanting to know "How quickly can I become certified by the SPFA PCP?" This usually happens when the contractor receives a bid requiring the work to be done by SPFA PCP Certified applicators. Our immediate question is, "Are you certifiable?"

The Professional Certification Program is seeking volunteers for the PCP Exam Prep curriculum review. We’ll be meeting shortly to divide assignments and give details on the review process.

If you aren’t able to help out with the curriculum review, but you’ll be attending the Spray Foam 2017 convention in Palm Springs, we could use your help there!

We are looking at data showing that many folks have successfully completed some of the requirements needed to become SPFA PCP Certified; however, they haven’t submitted all the information needed to earn the distinguished SPFA PCP Certification.

Please let us know what is holding you up.

A Working Group is being formed to reach out to those who have begun, but not yet completed certification levels. We’d like to hear from you on what is stopping you from completing the requirements. This same group will also work on retaining and renewing those who are already certified and helping them get to the next level!

We look forward to hearing from you. Please direct comments, concerns and questions to Kelly Marcavage at kmarcavage@sprayfoam.org

In 2012, OSHA began a program to align the old Hazard Communications Standard (HCS) with the new Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). https://www.osha.gov/dsg/hazcom/ This new system to be implemented over the next several years, includes updated methods to communicate hazards on product labels and safety data sheets using an international standard.
