SCAPA Participates in Aviation Tradeshow, STEM events

Earlier this month, SCAPA participated in the SC Aviation Association's (SCAA) Annual Conference, held at the Wild Dunes Resort on Isle of Palms, SC. The SCAA actively promotes and encourages aviation and airport development to meet air transportation needs and assists the state in achieving economic development goals. A record crowd at the 2017 Annual Conference consisted of county aviation personnel, airport officials, airport design consultants, pavement professionals, pilots and state aeronautics officials.

SCAPA connected with many individuals during the show to promote the usage of asphalt at airports across the state. As mentioned in this edition of Paving the Way, Palmetto Corp's fuel-resistant asphalt apron project at the Georgetown Airport took home the award for this year's SCAPA Innovative Pavement Award. SCAPA and its members look forward to continuing the partnership with state and county aviation officials for years to come.

Technical Director Jayson Jordan recently volunteered at various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) events for aspiring engineers in the state. Jordan serves as Vice President for the Columbia Chapter of the South Carolina Society of Professional Engineers (SCSPE). The SCSPE's Columbia Chapter actively participates in various STEM events such as the Future City and MathCounts competitions.

This past month, Jordan served as a judge at the state Future City competition. Hilton Head Christian took home the "Protection of the Public" award (pictured right), which is sponsored by SCSPE Columbia Chapter. Earlier this month, Jordan also volunteered with other SCSPE Columbia Chapter members at the midlands MathCounts competition. Jordan looks forward to continuing representing the SC asphalt industry and giving back to our future engineers in the state.
