SCAPA Visits Students at Clemson University

The association's motto, "Together We Know More," best describes our reason for existence. SCAPA continues to emphasize education -- not only through continuing education of those currently in the industry, but also through outreach efforts to local universities and technical colleges.

Earlier this month, Technical Director Jayson Jordan traveled to the upstate to speak with civil engineering students at Clemson University. Jordan was invited to serve as a guest lecturer in Dr. Brad Putman's CE 8230 Asphalt Concrete Properties class. The students have covered various topics throughout the semester such as mix design, asphalt binder properties, and chemistry, along with learning about quality control tests. Jordan's lecture discussed the importance of understanding the results of the tests and the relationships that mix characteristics have with each other. It was stressed that the importance of knowing and understanding these relationships can help troubleshoot issues when things go wrong.

Later that day, Jordan had the opportunity to speak in front of the Clemson student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The students got to learn about SCAPA, the basics of asphalt, and upcoming internship opportunities through SCAPA's Internship program. During the Q&A session, students inquired about things that would help prepare them for life after school and things to expect after graduation.

SCAPA hopes to continue the college outreach efforts with more in-state school visits in the coming months.
