Member Spotlight: Preferred Materials, Inc.

Preferred Materials, Inc. is a division of Oldcastle with its corporate office in Savannah, GA and plant locations in Hardeeville, SC and Savannah, GA. The company covers all of Beaufort and Jasper counties and portions of other border counties nearby.


Preferred Materials has over 80 local employees and over 750 company-wide. Their scope of work includes asphalt materials sales and asphalt paving services as well as related highway construction management services, including site work, heavy highway, and civil construction.


Preferred Materials is part of Oldcastle—the largest manufacturer of building products in North America, operating in 50 states and four Canadian provinces. Preferred Materials is a leading supplier of asphalt, concrete, concrete products, and paving services in the Southeast, with 15 asphalt plants, 32 ready mixed plans, and more than 750 dedicated and trained professionals.


Each year Preferred Materials holds an annual Safety Day Awards banquet/family day for all of its employees. The objective is to demonstrate and reinforce to those immediate family members of employees just how important that a safe working culture is to the localized management team and to Oldcastle, Inc. Awards are given to those with multiple safe working years of service.


In 2014, Preferred Materials completed a 5-mile widening section of US 278 in Beaufort County. The $26 million project was completed on time and within budget despite over 40 changes in scope of work.


Currently, Preferred Materials is the prime contractor on Beaufort County’s/City of Beaufort’s Boundary Street Revitalization. This $18 Million project is very important to the local community and sets the stage for continued reinvestment and localized growth. The project has multiple phases of work with heavy utility coordination.


This month, Preferred Materials helped to build an agricultural research garden for the Richmond Hill Middle School. This garden will provide learning opportunities for years to come for the youth of our local community.


Preferred Materials has received a National Asphalt Pavement Association Quality in Construction Award for Runway Rehabilitation at Beaufort County’s Marine Corps Air Station, as well as numerous other National Asphalt Pavement Association Awards.
