Low Country Engineers Participate in GA/SC Joint Asphalt Seminar

Last month, engineers from the Low Country attended an asphalt continuing education event at Armstrong State University in Savannah, Georgia. The lunch and learn event, sponsored by Preferred Materials, Inc., was hosted by the Georgia Asphalt Pavement Association (GAPA) and South Carolina Asphalt Pavement Association (SCAPA). GAPA was represented by their technical director, Will Rogers, PhD. SCAPA Technical Director Jayson Jordan, PE was the other guest speaker at the event.

The seminar covered various asphalt topics through the day, starting with transportation funding in both states. The technical presentations began with teaching the different types of asphalt mixes.

Knowing the appropriate mix types for the right application helps save the owner money and gives them a smooth product with excellent aesthetic value. The speakers discussed material sources and how it has an impact on costs. Dr. Rogers discussed GDOT's Off System Specifications, followed by Mr. Jordan giving the engineers a crash course on the SCAPA Pavement Design Guide. After receiving an update on specification updates from both states, the attendees were able to participate in a Q&A session with GAPA and SCAPA.
