VTRC Report: Improving Mixture Durability Through Design Gyrations, Air Voids, and Binder Content

The Virginia Transportation Research Council recently released the report "Improving Mixture Durability Through Design Gyrations, Air Voids, and Binder Content." The project used lab performance tests on four mixes that ranged from 65 gyrations and 4 percent air voids to 50 gyrations and 3.5 percent air voids and that increased asphalt content by 0.2 and 0.4 percent for a 50 gyration mixture. The study found that additional liquid binder affects the cracking and rutting resistance of the tested mixtures. Additionally, the coarsest mixture showed that mixtures can weaken with too much binder.
