Member Spotlight: Satterfield Construction Company, Inc.

Satterfield Construction Co. (SCC) is headquartered in Greenwood, SC with plant operations in Greenwood, Aiken and Newberry, SC. The company’s scope of work includes asphalt manufacture, asphalt paving, grading, asphalt milling, and cement modified base.

SCC was founded by Curtis T. Satterfield in 1954 at the age of 22. In 1969 he purchased his first asphalt plant to pave a 22-mile section of what is now I-385 in Laurens County. During this period, the company grew to 3 asphalt plants, 2 concrete plants and 4 quarry locations. Unfortunately, in 1973 at the age of 41, Curtis passed away. That year SCC recorded $17 million in sales. In 1975, SCC was awarded $41.5 million of SCDOT contracts, to include I-20, I-95, and I-77. At that time, the company had 700 employees on the payroll.

In the 21 years since the end of the interstate new construction phase, SCC's concentrated focus became asphalt resurfacing in 8 of South Carolina’s counties: Greenwood, Abbeville, McCormick, Edgefield, Saluda, Laurens, Newberry, and Aiken.

In 1996, SCC became a division of CR Jackson, Inc. Today, the company maintains a rich history of attracting, retaining, and on the job training of some of the most talented employees in the industry. At SCC, four current managers have a combined 122 years of service with the company; none of the four are over 55 years of age.

One interesting project SCC completed was on I-520, Palmetto Parkway Phase I & II in North Augusta, SC. This was a design-build partnership. SCC also worked on 2 design-build intersections for safety improvements at Robert M. Bell Parkway in Aiken, SC and Five Notch Road at Pisgah Road in Aiken, SC.
