This month SCAPA traveled to the Grand Strand to meet with Civil Engineering Technology (CET) students at Horry Georgetown Technical College (HGTC). The HGTC students were able to learn about the opportunities in the asphalt industry along with various topics like asphalt basics, asphalt plants and roadway construction basics. The lecture fostered excellent discussion from the class and reinforced some of the lessons they are being taught in their other degree courses.
Earlier this week, SCAPA had the opportunity to guest lecture at The Citadel. The cadets in the Highway Engineering courses learned about the association and the many asphalt resources that are available. Additionally, the highlights of SCAPA's Asphalt Pavement Design Guide for Low Volume Roads and Parking Lots were discussed. Students learned about the inputs needed to design a new road, using appropriate mixes, designing a pavement structure and constructing a quality asphalt pavement. The cadets also were privy to some of the items in SCAPA's upcoming Overlay Design Guide, such as evaluating existing pavements.
The Citadel was gracious enough to allow SCAPA also participate in the Asphalt and Concrete Lab, where students were learning about SuperPAVE mix design.
