Women of Asphalt Council Kickoff Event a Huge Success

On Tuesday, March 6, the Women of Asphalt Council (WOAC) hosted a mixer at the Asphalt Institute and Asphalt Pavement Alliance booths, where they handed out pink t-shirts and had a photo booth with props for attendees to enjoy. On Wednesday, March 7, the group held a forum which consisted of a keynote presentation by Dr. Audrey Copeland of the National Asphalt Pavement Association on the state of women working in the asphalt industry and a panel discussion moderated by SCAPA Executive Director Ashley Batson.
Panel members included: Sheila Barkevich, Senior Vice President, Callanan Industries, Albany, NY; Jan Callahan, President and Chief Operating Officer, Palmer Paving, Springfield, MA; Kat Crownover, Manager Supply and Trading, Valero Energy Corporation, San Antonio, TX; Amy Epps-Martin, PhD, Professor, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX; Rachel Sullivan, Construction Dispatcher, Gallagher Asphalt, Greater Chicago area, IL; and Rhonda Taylor, PE, State Pavement Design Engineer, Florida Department of Transportation, Tallahassee, FL.
The panelists discussed several key topics regarding what it means to be a woman working in the industry and ways the industry can recruit more women to join the industry. The panelists also answered questions from audience members.
