Every January, thousands of transportation professionals flock to the nation's capital for the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting. The 97th Annual Meeting was held January 8-12 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC. Over 800 sessions and workshops are compressed into the five-day meeting and address relevant topics of interest for policy makers, researchers, industry representatives, etc.

Workshop #124 (pictured right), Balanced Asphalt Mixture Design: Implementation Efforts and Success Stories, was one of our favorite sessions of this year's meeting. The group addressed Balanced Mix Design implementation efforts in various states such as Louisiana, Illinois, Texas, Maine and other locations across the nation. Balanced Mix Design efforts are intended to balance rutting and cracking resistance of asphalt mixtures.

In addition to sessions, this year, Technical Director Jayson Jordan, PE was added to AFH60, the TRB Standing Committee on Asphalt Pavement Construction and Rehabilitation. The committee features industry leaders from FHWA, DOTs, academia, trade associations, contractors, consultant engineering companies, equipment vendors as well as some international members. AFH60 is concerned with the construction, rehab and recycling of asphalt pavements. Some topics that are discussed are construction methods and procedures, in-place recycling techniques, plant production issues that impact construction operations, and paving equipment. Jayson also presided over Poster Session #249 - Advances in Cold Recycling with Case Study on Intelligent Compaction and Thermal Profiling for Hot-Mix Asphalt.
